ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A report commissioned by Congress says the Pentagon needs to do more to pay for traffic improvements around six military bases that are getting tens of thousands of new workers.

The report released Monday looked at traffic needs in six locations that are getting a big influx of personnel under a 2005 congressional plan to reconfigure military bases around the country.

The National Research Council's Transportation Research Board said congestion could severely slow down commutes both for the military and for people in surrounding communities.

The report examined traffic impact at Fort Meade and the National Naval Medical Center in Maryland, Virginia's Fort Belvoir, Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington, Florida's Eglin Air Force Base and Fort Bliss, Texas.
