Western New York was guaranteed representation in the USA Hockey Tier I 14-under championship tournament by virtue of the Buffalo Regals and West Seneca Wings both reaching the state final at Northtown Center in Amherst.

Matt Gasuik and Eric Urbank made sure the state champion crown was fit for the Regals. Both finished with four points each as the Regals captured the state title and earned a trip to the USA Hockey Tournament with a 9-3 rout of West Seneca. The Regals return to action April 2-6 in the USA Hockey Championships in Green Bay.

Gasuik had two goals and two assists, Urbank had a goal and three assist as seven different players scored for the Regals (63-8-5). Dylan Seitz had two goals, while Dan Smith had a goal and two assists. Goalie John Stotz made 22 saves for the team coached by Brian Gasuik.

In the 12-under Tier I state tournament final, Andy Hadasz’s tip-in late in double overtime allowed the Syracuse Nationals to beat the Buffalo Regals, 5-4. Case McCarthy scored twice for the Regals, while Trevor Kuntar and Jake Blidy also scored for Buffalo.

The only other final involving a local team had the Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles dropping a 6-5 decision to Aviator Hockey Club in the 12-under Tier II final.
