ROCHESTER — Abby Wambach scored both goals, her first of the season, and the Western New York Flash closed a three-game homestand with its first shutout of 2014, defeating Sky Blue FC of New Jersey, 2-0, in front of 3,107 at Sahlen’s Stadium.
The Flash (3-1-1), who sit in second place in the National Women’s Soccer League, will play their next three games on the road. Sky Blue is 1-3-3.
Wambach opened the scoring in the 49th minute, McCall Zerboni was fouled on the left side and Vicky Losada sent in a bending free kick to the head of Wambach, who finished past Brittany Cameron.
Wambach put the game away late in the second half with an injury time goal off a long drop kick from goalkeeper Kelsey Wys, who got a shutout in her professional debut.
Wys played in place of starting keeper Lydia Williams, who was away with the Australian National team. Australia is competing for the Asian Cup. Wys was a second-round draft pick this year out of Florida State.
Wambach led Western New York with four shots, all of them on target. Wys finished with two saves en route to the Flash’s first clean sheet of the year.
The Flash will head to Washington for its next game, facing the Spirit at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. The team returns to Sahlen’s Stadium on May 31, when it hosts Houston Dash for the first time ever.
