The University at Buffalo wrestling team defeated Sacred Heart, 30-6, but lost two other matches Saturday in the Northeast Duals held in Troy.
The Bulls (1-2) lost to North Carolina State, 31-7, in their opening match and fell to Clarion (Pa.), 29-7, in the second round of the consolation bracket.
“We need focus on the process and wrestling hard,” said UB coach John Stutzman. “We did some good things today, but we need to have more urgency and belief in ourselves.”
Max Soria started off the day strong for the Bulls with a major decision over Brandon Calas of N.C. State. The Bulls however, dropped their next seven matches before Angelo Malvestuto won by decision over Karrone Jones at 197 pounds.
In the first round consolation bracket, the Bulls dominated from the start against Sacred Heart, losing only one match. Soria picked up his second straight major decision while Justin Farmer and Nick Flannery picked up solid wins at 133 and 141 pounds respectively.
John Northrup, Tyler Rill and Tony Lock each won by major decision. Against Clarion, Wally Maziarz won in double overtime and Malvestuto won his third straight match on the day, two at 197 pounds and one as a heavyweight.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: West Virginia (20-13) swept UB, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-21 at Alumni Arena. Megan Lipski had 11 kills and Dani Reinert had 21 assists for the Bulls (18-12) in the regular-season finale.
