Kelly Svoboda had 25 digs, Dani Reinert had 25 assists and Christine Fritsche led in kills with 10 as the undefeated University at Buffalo women’s volleyball team escaped with a close call in the first set before sweeping Canisius, 27-25, 25-23 and 25-20, before 321 at the Koessler Athletic Center Tuesday night.

UB is 10-0 for the season and has lost only two of 32 sets.

Jacklyn Malusa and Lauren Siebert had eight kills each for Canisius (2-9) while Sydney Palka had 16 assists and Emily Litwin had 17 digs.

BASKETBALL: The UB men’s team will open its first season under new coach Bobby Hurley on Nov. 8 at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.

Highlighting the local schedule will be the Bulls’ first game in the First Niagara Center since 2004 on Dec. 11, when they face Canisius.

UB’s home opener will be against West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, Nov. 16. That will be followed by three more games in Alumni Arena against Robert Morris, Delaware State and St. Bonaventure.

UB will face Manhattan in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Dec. 21 and Drexel in Philadelphia on Dec. 29. The Bulls’ Mid-American Conference opener will be Jan. 8 at home against Northern Illinois.

Other nonconference home games will be against Binghamton on Dec. 23 and South Dakota State on Jan. 3.

Conference play will wrap up at home against Bowling Green with a tentative date of Saturday, March 8. The game could be moved to March 7 for TV purposes. The first round of the MAC Tournament will be on March 10 at campus sites with the rest of the tournament at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland March 12-15. Canisius learned Tuesday that its first-round opponent in the NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament will be host Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. on Nov. 18. The other teams in the North Bracket are Elon and Drexel.

The two winners will meet on Nov. 19 for the right to advance to the final four in Madison Square Garden on Nov. 27.

The Golden Griffins will open their regular season on Nov. 11 at the Koessler Center against South Dakota, then play at St. Bonaventure on Nov. 16.

GOLF: St. Bonaventure tied for second with a 291 total and Canisius was fourth Tuesday in the 25th annual Leo Keenan Invitational, hosted by Bona at Bartlett Country Club. Josh Stauffer of the Bonnies tied for second with a 145 total. Three Canisius golfers placed among the top-15 and the Golden Griffins shot a team score of 300. Robert Morris won the event with a 36-hole team score of 578. Bona’s Darrin Simons was fifth after shooting a final round 71 for 146. Sophomore Brendan Polsin of the Griffs tied for seventh in the field with 147. Polsin shot a 74 in the final round. Freshman David Berkun (Williamsville North) and sophomore Andrew Romano (Lancaster) tied for 14th at 149. Garrett Browning of Robert Morris was the individual medalist with 73-143.
