CHICAGO — The Canisius men's basketball team opened its season with an 89-69 loss Tuesday night to Loyola of Chicago in the Gentile Center — its sixth straight defeat in a season opener.

Canisius led only once, 12-10, before the five-minute mark. Loyola (1-1) ended the half on a 5-0 run for a 46-35 lead and quickly took charge in the second half, leading by 15 to 21 points most of the way.

Julius Coles topped the Golden Griffins with 18 points, Frank Turner had 17 points and seven assists and Greg Logins added 11 points. Geoff McCammon led the Ramblers with 22 points.

Canisius had 22 turnovers and made only 6 of 21 (28.6 percent) from outside the three-point arc, while Loyola shot 61.1 percent (11 of 18).

Canisius has not won a season opener since 2003 at the University at Buffalo.
