High school extra: O.P. edges Lancaster
For the Orchard Park boys soccer team, the wait was worth it.
Matt Hamister and Andrew Dietrick scored as the Quakers eliminated host Lancaster, 2-1, in a Section VI Class AA quarterfinal game played Monday. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but had to be postponed because of the wind and field conditions.
"I think it [the postponement] made the contest a more level competition for both teams," said OP coach Josh Dannecker. "It was more like a soccer game instead of someone getting lucky because of the wind conditions. We're more of a skill team and the wind would have affected our play."
The Quakers scored in the first 4:45 of the game when Hamister got a cross from Dietrick, brought it down to his foot, and scored. Lancaster then answered to tie it. OP's winning goal came 25 minutes into the second half when Ryan Lindquist played the ball up the middle and Dietrick ran onto it, took a shot at the top of the 18-yard line, and scored.
For Hamister it was his 15th goal while Dietrick has eight.
OP sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Dilapo had six saves. Lancaster nearly tied the game with two minutes left, but Dilapo made the save. "They were putting a lot of pressure on at the end," said Dannecker. "Jordan just got his finger on a shot, tipped it wide enough that it hit the post and went out of bounds."
OP (10-6) advanced to Wednesday's semifinals where it will face No. 1 seed Clarence at 5 p.m. at Hamburg.
City Honors in Radcliffe soccer final
The City Honors girls soccer team will compete for its fifth consecutive Radcliffe Cup following Monday's 5-0 semifinal win over Buffalo Arts.
Fiona Henning, Zoe Stout, Ana Reigstab, Lauren d'Angelo and Erin Lachaal scored for the Centaurs (14-6-1), who will face da Vinci in Wednesday's final at All-High Stadium at 4 p.m. Katherine Weeman and Annie Willis combined on the shutout. City Honors' 12-0 league record includes a win over da Vinci.
The game was the first for the Centaurs since a heartbreaking loss, 1-0, to Olean in the first round of the Section VI Class B playoffs. Helping keep the team together on and off the field has been senior center-midfielder Jenna Levine, who coach William Cochrane said, "is the complete heartbeat of the team.
"She's the hardest working kid on the field. In Buffalo there's no assistant coaches, and she's like having another set of eyes. She's really responsible and welcoming."
