* Week Eight of the football season will be highlighted by the kickoff of the Section VI playoffs. All five defending class champions have qualified. Orchard Park (Class AA) hosts Williamsville North on Friday. Sweet Home (Class A) hosts Amherst on Saturday. Lackawanna (Class B) hosts Albion on Friday. Southwestern (Class C) hosts Gowanda on Friday and Maple Grove (Class D) hosts Cattaraugus/Little Valley on Friday. ... St. Francis starts the weekend early traveling to Cathedral Prep (Pa.) on Thursday at 7 p.m. ... In the Monsignor Martin Association, Cardinal O'Hara takes on St. Joe's on Saturday at 2 p.m.

* In boys soccer, St. Francis is at Nichols as the Monsignor Martin Association wraps up its regular season. The league's quarterfinal playoffs begin on Friday. ... * In girls soccer, co-No. 3 ranked small school East Aurora plays at No. 6 Holland tonight at 6:30 p.m. ... Also today, Orchard Park is at Williamsville North in a key ECIC I battle. ... Nardin hosts Mount St. Mary on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at the Buffalo Soccer Club, 97 Lucid in Cheektowaga off Genesee Street. The Nardin players will be wearing pink uniforms in memory of Alison Gmerek, parent of a Nardin player, who died of cancer on Aug. 10, 2008 at age 42. ... On Friday, don't miss Williamsville East at Williamsville North.

* The Section VI girls volleyball seedings meeting is Wednesday. First-round qualifiers begin on Friday at the higher seed.

* In girls tennis, the ECIC Doubles Championship will be Friday and Saturday at the Village Glen in Williamsville. ... The Niagara Frontier League tournament is Friday at Sportsplex.

* The Williamsville South field hockey team needs to win at Sweet Home on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. to capture the small school division. ... The seedings meeting is Friday.

* The All-High Cross Country Championships are today at Delaware Park's Rose Garden. ... The Clarence Invitational will be Saturday at Akron Falls. The Red Devils boys and girls teams are the No. 1-ranked large schools in WNY.

* Thursday will be a big night in boys volleyball as No. 3-ranked Canisius is at No. 10 St. Joe's and No. 4 Clarence is at No. 6 Eden. ... Hamburg's tournament is Saturday.

* In girls swimming, Clarence is at Williamsville North today in a meet that will decide the ECIC I title.

* COACH OF THE WEEK: John Faller of Sweet Home has been named the NFL/Buffalo Bills Coach of the Week for Week Seven. The Panthers beat Amherst, 42-0, extending their winning streak to 20 games.

* TRENCH TROPHY: Week Seven honor roll: Keith Bykowski (Cheektowaga), Brandon Hite (Fredonia), Desmond Howard (St. Francis), Shawn Kennedy (Lancaster), Kyle Moore (Albion) and Marquan Myles (Niagara Falls).

Bulletin board

ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS: Coaches and athletic directors of all schools in Western New York are encouraged to nominate fall sports athletes for the All-Western New York Scholar Athlete Team. Nominees must have a grade-point average of 90 or above. Nomination forms are included in all Section VI handbooks and are available via www.section6.e1b.org. Nominations are due to the Section VI office by Nov. 15.
