Sabres re-sign Ellis for one season
The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed unrestricted free agent forward Matt Ellis to a one-year contract, GM Darcy Regier announced Thursday on the team's web site.
Ellis, who will turn 28 shortly before training camp opens in September. The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder played in 45 games for the Sabres last season, setting career highs in goals (7), assists (5) and points (12). Ellis had a career-best three point game (2+1) in Boston on January 3, 2009. Ellis also had four points (2+2) in 12 games with Portland (AHL) at the start of last season.
Ellis has 20 points (10+10) in 115 career NHL games with the Sabres, Los Angeles Kings and Detroit Red Wings.
The Welland, Ont. native was claimed off waivers by the Sabres from Los Angeles on October 1, 2008.
The signing gives the team some veteran depth, which it lost as other players, such as Mathieu Darche, who spent last season at Portland have left the organization. Darche signed with Montreal.
