Herd snaps skid, clips Red Wings

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Story tools:

ROCHESTER — The last time Nelson Figueroa faced the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field, he pitched quite well but didn’t receive any run support in defeat.

That wasn’t the problem here Saturday night.

The Buffalo Bisons received another quality performance from their all-star right-hander, while the offense provided plenty of fireworks as the Herd ended a five-game losing streak with an 8-3 triumph over the Red Wings.

One night after the Bisons were humbled, 6-2, before a season-high crowd at Coca-Cola Field, they returned the favor in beating their Thruway rivals for the first time in three meetings this season before 10,206. The Bisons did it by stringing together timely hits and productive at-bats in key situations.

Figueroa went seven innings here on April 29, but was the losing pitcher in a 1-0 Buffalo defeat. This time, the Bisons put together a 12-hit attack and scored seven runs while he was on the mound.

Figueroa, who has allowed more than three runs just once in his 13 starts, yielded two runs on five hits in six innings.

The Bisons went ahead for good in the second inning when Mike Lamb scored on Rene Rivera’s sacrifice fly after earning a leadoff walk. Lamb later added an RBI single and a solo homer.

The Herd scored three runs in the third and three more times in the sixth to help Figueroa (4-4) earn his fourth straight win. Jesus Feliciano drove in two runs, while Javier Castillo and Emil Brown each had RBI singles.

The run support proved to be more than enough for Figueroa, who entered the game with a 2.61 ERA.

The two teams play a day-night doubleheader today (1:05 and 7:05 p. m., Radio 1520 AM, TWC 13) before closing the series here Monday night.
