Hoppy earns Player of the Year

NEWS SPORTS REPORTER

Story tools:

Kyle Hoppy isn't sure yet if he's going to play professional baseball or go to Bucknell, but one thing has been decided for him.

The Orchard Park senior has been named the Western New York Player of the Year by a panel of area coaches.

Hoppy figured to have at least the next four years accounted for after accepting an athletic grant to Bucknell, where he could play baseball and football.

But then the Baltimore Orioles took him in the 28th round of the recent Major League Baseball Draft. If he were to sign he would leave immediately and join the Gulf Coast [Rookie] League Orioles.

"Right now I'm up in the air. Bucknell is a great school and I love all the people there," said Hoppy. "Either way I know it's going to be a good decision for me, and it's going to be good for my future."

He has until Aug. 15 to decide.

Hoppy had a big year for the Quakers on defense … where he didn't commit an error in center field … and on offense where he batted .551 with 34 RBIs and eight home runs.

In a win against Penfield, he had four extra-base hits, including a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh. Quite simply, Orchard Park coach Jim Gibson called him the "WNY Player of the Year. Period."

Frank Polino of Canisius, Jason Radwan of Lake Shore and Jordan Cave of Cheektowaga were the other Player of the Year nominees.

The last POY from Orchard Park was Chris Warner in 2004.

There was plenty of talent on Western New York baseball diamonds this spring. Last year just one player, Sebby Bellitto of Jamestown, signed a Division I scholarship. This year there are eight. Four players have signed with Canisius: Kevin and Scott Whitehead of Kenmore East, along with Cave and Polino.

Hoppy's committed to Bucknell, Radwan is going to St. Bonaventure, Nick Jasinski of St. Francis has signed with the University at Buffalo and Ryan Balbierz of Frontier signed with Duquesne.

Radwan joins a very exclusive club as the only player, beside Orchard Park graduate Joe Todaro (1998-2000), named All-WNY three times. Radwan did not strike out this season. A feared hitter, Maryvale intentionally walked him four times.

"He's a complete player, not just a great hitter, but a great fielder and an excellent pitcher," said Lake Shore coach Bob Kowal. "He is a true team leader, a throwback to the past, a three-sport athlete, who is also an honor student. Nobody meant more to his team than Jason."

Three all-WNY players were also first teamers in other sports: Cave (volleyball), Hoppy (football) and Polino (hockey). Cave's Cheektowaga volleyball team won the Section VI Class B championship. Hoppy was the QB on the Quakers' state championship football team.

Jesse Kelso is the first All-WNY baseball pick for St. Mary's since Peter Dudek in 1981.

Joel Klock is Grand Island's first first-team selection since Jeff Sargent in 1998. Klock led the Vikings to the Section VI Class A title and a share of the NFL crown. He had a no-hitter with 18 Ks against Kenmore East.

It was a big senior year for the 6-foot-6 Jason Norsen of Frontier. Beside being named All-WNY in baseball he was second team in volleyball and basketball. He batted .533 with 30 RBIs. He's taking his 99 average and going to St. John Fisher for hoops.

Matt Corigliano earned a share of ECIC II Player of the Year honors while leading Iroquois to the league title.

In the same month that retired coach Jack Yanno publishes a book on Clarence baseball history, the 2009 Red Devils go on a historic run … winning a school-record 22 games. Clarence and Frewsburg were the only teams in WNY to compete for a state title. Clarence lost to I-Mamaroneck in Class AA while Frewsburg fell to II-Maple Hill in Class C.

Sophomore SS/P Zach Lauricella played his way onto All-WNY with three postseason wins on the mound. He shut out Frontier, 5-0, in the Sectional final, got the win in relief against V-Penfield in the Far West Regionals and gave up one run in the state semifinal, a 2-1 win over II-Columbia. He also put up big numbers in the classroom with a 98 average.

Frewsburg's Thad Johnson was named CCAA II Player of the Year.

Fredonia lost in the state's Class B semifinal to eventual champ III-Westhill, whose only loss the entire season was to Gowanda.

In the FWR, Grand Island lost to eventual Class A state champion V-Aquinas. North Collins also lost to the team that won the Class D title, V-Arkport. Brandon Judson of North Collins was the CCAA III East Player of the Year.

Canisius beat three-time defending Georgetown Cup champion St. Francis taking the series, 2-1, to finish 23-5.

Three All-WNY picks were ranked among the top 10 in their class academically: Lauricella is in the top six, Aaron Benton of Gowanda is ranked No. 7 and Norsen is ranked 9th in a class of 435.

Section VI had six teams among the top 21 receive the Scholar/Athlete Team Award, which recognizes teams that have a collective average of at least 90. Sweet Home was in third place with a 94.8. Also ranked were: Lake Shore (12th), Clarence (13th), Niagara Falls (19th), Falconer (20th) Dunkirk (21st).

Named to Dick Gallagher's WNY High School Sports All-Academic team were: Aaron Benton (Gowanda), Kyle Hoppy (Orchard Park), Aaron Huber (Iroquois), Brandon Kilijanski (West Seneca West), Joe Oliverio (Grand Island), Chris Podlucky (Grand Island), Jason Radwan (Lake Shore), Eric Renn (Lake Shore), Angelo Sciandra (Cardinal O'Hara), Zachary Sliwa (Dunkirk), Brendan Toughey (St. Joe's).

Seven All-WNY players were members of last summer's medal-winning Empire State Games team.
