City Honors streak at 100

The City Honors coed swimming team beat Buffalo Arts, 156-46, on Monday to extend its streak of dual meet victories in the Syracuse Cup to 100.

After the meet the Centaurs shared a cake to help celebrate the milestone.

The Centaurs haven’t lost a meet in the City since Hutch-Tech beat them in February of 1999. Coach Margaret Cardina has won the Cup in 10 of her 12 seasons.

The Centaurs take an 11-0 record into next Monday’s All-High Championships at the Erie Community College at 4 p. m.

It’s been a big year so far for City Honors. Senior Lizzie Lodinsky broke her own City record in the 200 freestyle with a 2:02.43.

There are four seniors who have been with the team since eighth grade: Lodinsky, Maddy Eberle, Kosta Gioulekas and Zachary Crawford.

The Centaurs have qualified one individual swimmer and two relays for the upcoming Section VI championships. Ivan Bakin will compete in the 100 butterfly. Fran Cunningham, Gioulekas, Bakin, Daser Ibrahim and Anthony Solomon make up the 200 free and 200 medley relays.

Kopp ties mother’s mark

Samantha Kopp scored 40 points bringing her career total to 2,196 and tying her mother’s school record in Franklinville’s 54-39 win over Westfield. Laura Hughes-Kopp also scored 2,196 points for the Panthers in a career that ended in 1983. Samantha owns a share of third place among Western New York’s all-time girls basketball scoring leaders.

St. Joe’s survives scare

Dave Seward scored a shorthanded goal with four minutes left as St. Joe’s salvaged a 2-2 tie with upset- minded Frontier in a Federation hockey game played Monday in Hamburg. Seward walked in on a two-on-one break and fired the puck into the top corner. It was his sixth goal in the last four games. Coach Rich Crozier said Seward is going to the net hard and making the most of his chances.

The Marauders (14-1-4) face Williamsville North in a game for first place in the Federation on Thursday at 7 p. m. at the Pespi Center.

Haskell hits 1,000

Pioneer senior Lucas Haskell added to his career point total Monday night after joining the 1,000- point mark for his career last Friday.

Haskell, who now has 1,044 points after scoring 25 in Monday night’s 78-55 win over West Seneca East, joined Wilson senior Ethan Baker and juniors Will Regan ( Nichols) and Aaron Davis ( North Tonawanda) in surpassing the mark.

Haskell achieved the feat in a 71-55 loss to surging Maryvale. During a 28-point game he hit five threes, “all from another zip code,” according to Maryvale coach Mark Kensy.

• Michael Lumley of St. Mary’s School for the Deaf, needs 16 points to break the school’s all-time basketball scoring record. Lumley is 16 points shy of the mark of 1,823. The Saints host Park today at 4 p. m.

Lackawanna prepped for its showdown with Alden by defeating JFK, 92-45, in ECIC IV. Darren Cleveland had 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Steelers (7-0), who travel to Alden (6-0) on Friday.
