Griffs women win 9th in row
Perhaps something special is brewing this season with the Canisius women’s basketball team.
The Golden Griffins limited host Iona (9-7, 2-3) to one field goal over the final nine minutes to pull away for a 68-51 win in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game in the Hynes Center in New Rochelle.
Senior Marie Warner led the Griffs (12-4, 4-1) with 15 points and five rebounds as Canisius won its ninth straight, its longest streak since the 1989-90 season. The Griffins have won 11 of their last 12 games, with the lone defeat to three-time defending MAAC champion and nationally ranked Marist.
Amanda Cavo added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Brittane Russell had 12 points, four assists and four steals for coach Terry Zeh’s crew, which for the second straight game struggled to make three-pointers — its bread and butter. The Griffins have made just 6 of 30 shots from beyond the arc after making 35 of 81 in their three previous games.
Niagara loses, again
Ali Morris scored a career-high 18 points for Niagara (1-15, 0-5), but the Purple Eagles lost their 13th-straight, 81-59. to Siena (4-10, 3-2) at the Alumni Recreation Center in Loudonville.
Freshman Grace Cunningham (Iroquois) made her only field goal, a three-pointer, in six minutes of action for Niagara.
