Regan hits 1,000th point

Will Regan scored 37 points to surpass 1,000 in his career as Nichols downed St. Francis, 83-71, in a Monsignor Martin Association basketball game Friday night. The junior center also had 19 rebounds as the Vikings moved to 11-1, 3-0. Nichols led, 47-46, at halftime.

Canisius earned a 71-69 overtime triumph over visiting St. Mary’s. Blair Helton scored eight of his 15 points in overtime for the Crusaders (4-5, 2-0), who blew fourth-quarter leads in losses to Utica Notre Dame and Regis of New York City the past few weeks.

Canisius — which trailed, 20-10, in the first quarter — had a four-point lead in the final minute of regulation, but the Lancers forced overtime on back-to-back baskets by Joe Barnhardt and Vince Kazmierczak. Barnhardt and Kazmierczak each had 22 points for St. Mary’s (7-3, 0-2).

Cardinal O’Hara took a one-point lead with less than minute left and held on to beat St. Joe’s, 65-64. St. Joe’s missed two layups in the last few seconds and 5-foot-7 Nick Pfohman then blocked a three-pointer with 3.3 seconds left for the Hawks.

Reginald Martin had 16 points and Amir Thomas and Brendan added 15 points to lead O’Hara. Kyle Wojciechowski of the Marauders led all scorers with 24 points.

Maryvale drops Depew

Bryce Shepard made the second of two free throws with 0.7 seconds left as Maryvale handed Depew a rare ECIC III loss, 44-43. Depew won the division last year at 14-0. Maryvale had a three-point lead late, but Depew’s Anthony Bataglia (20 points) got fouled taking a three-pointer and made all three free throws to tie it. Andre Davis and Shepard had 13 rebounds each.

Mark Coppola had 17 points and 11 assists as Williamsville South beat Lake Shore, 81-71, in ECIC II. The Billies overcame 30 points by Erik Marx.

Jacks slow Lew-Port

Aaron Davis had 23 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists to help lead North Tonawanda to a 68-62 victory over Lewiston-Porter and leading scorer Robby Seyler (38 points).

NT took a 49-37 lead after three quarters and started the fourth with a 7-2 run to take a 56-39 lead in the Niagara Frontier League contest.

Seyler had 29 of his points in the second half, 21 of them in the fourth quarter. He scored Lew-Port’s first 18 points of the fourth quarter. Lew-Port came within 65-62 with 16 seconds left.

Kevin Miller contributed 15 points and Derrick Bloomfield added 12 for the Lumberjacks (4-4), who evened their NFL record to 2-2. Lew-Port is 5-3 and 1-3.

Wayne Ollison handed out 10 assists as No. 1 large school Niagara Falls moved to 9-0 with an 83-51 win over Kenmore West.

Greg Feathers had 19 points and 12 rebounds as Grand Island moved to 4-0 in the Niagara Frontier League beating Niagara- Wheatfield, 57-48.

Levi Pace had 11 of his 17 points in the second half as Medina beat Newfane, 47-39, to move to 3-0 in the Niagara-Orleans League.

OP ready for road trip

Orchard Park takes a 7-0 record into Jamestown on Monday night following Friday’s 50-37 girls basketball victory over Hamburg. Taylor Swiatek and Julia Smith had 10 points each for the ECIC I leaders.

Monday’s game will be the first for Jamestown since losing to Williamsville North on Thursday night. OP and Jamestown split their two games last year in the league.

“It’s going to be tough in Jamestown,” said coach Josh Dannecker. “They always come ready to play so we’re not getting overconfident because they have losses. It’ll be harder because they don’t have any games to throw away.”

Emily Ludwig recorded her ninth double- double with 14 points and 19 rebounds in Lake Shore’s 38-34 win over Starpoint in ECIC II. Brittany Mazzu made a turnaround jumper to tie the game at 34-34 with 54 seconds left. Sam Rosario- Rits followed with two free throws and Ludwig had a putback basket to seal it for the Eagles.

Lake Shore held Starpoint scoreless in the fourth quarter. “It was nice to finally put a team away in the fourth quarter, and that will give us a confidence moving forward,” said Lake Shore coach Andrea Mungovan.

Marissa Pullo had 10 steals for Holy Angels in a 47-23 win over Mount St. Mary in the Msgr. Martin Association. Katie Gibbins had 12 points and Kristen Hall eight rebounds for the Angels (7-4).

Marta Plonka had 13 points and Jonna Sakowski was next with 12 as Park moved to 3-0 in the IAC with a 46-27 win over Christian Central.

Katrina Barber and Kayla Golden had 10 rebounds each as Lackawanna moved to 9-1 with a 44-31 win over Cleveland Hill in ECIC IV.

Sloan Walton made five of six three-point attempts to finish with 17 points as Nichols (5-2, 3-0) beat Nardin, 53-42.

Senior Rebecca Dennee had a career-high 20 rebounds as Maryvale beat Springville, 49-44, in ECIC III.

OP swimmers prevail

Orchard Park beat visiting Iroquois, 199-64, in a boys swimming meet that will rewrite Tuesday’s Western New York top 10 leader board.

Close races were the norm led by the showdown in the 200-yard individual medley between junior Phil Aronica of OP and senior Matt Schwippert. Both swimmers swam times that qualified them for states. Aronica went a WNY-best 1:59.76 to better Schwippert’s 2:00.03.

Aronica also won the 100 free in a state-cut and WNY-leading 48.09.

“Phil had an on night. He swam a great race. He swam it [the IM] just like he had planned it,” said OP coach Art Aungst. “Phil came from behind on the breast and held him off in the freestyle. Matt Schwippert is just a great swimmer. It was something Phil was kind of aiming toward.”

Iroquois won two relays by slim margins. The Chiefs went a school record 1:41.70 in the 200 medley to edge OP’s 1:41.8. Those times are 1-2 in WNY. The Chiefs also won the 200 free relay in a WNY best 1:30.84. OP won the 400 free relay in 3:22.11, easily the fastest time in WNY.

“They’ve got a lot of top-end talent and don’t let off much with their depth,” said Iroquois coach Larry Moessinger. “We knew it would be difficult to stay with them in six-lane scoring, so we kind of opted to go for good times and make sure guys were rested going into their events.”

OP moves to 4-0 overall while Iroquois stands at 2-1-1.

Junior Andrew Barden won the 200 free (1:52.64) and 500 free (5:11.18) to pace Clarence to a 103-80 win over Williamsville East. Matt Geiger was also a double winner for the Flames in the 100 back (53.970 and 200 IM (2:04.64).

Will. North hockey wins

Matt Bauman scored the game-winner with 9:46 left to give Williamsville North a 3-2 win over Lancaster in Federation hockey. The Spartans (13-0-1) are ranked No. 1 in Division I of the New York State Sportswriters poll behind Greece Athena/Odyssey of Section V.

Sean McCairgher’s goal with five minutes left was the difference as Clarence edged Niagara Falls, 2-1.
