Jamestown, South girls win
Sophomore Sadie Breen had 21 points and 20 rebounds as Jamestown had to work a bit in winning its 37th straight home game, beating Williamsville North, 63-55, in ECIC I girls basketball. Erinne Cunningham added 16 points as the Red Raiders, last year’s Section VI Class AA champion, rallied from a one-point halftime deficit for the win in their opener.
Also in ECIC I, Jaymie Druding had 11 rebounds and four blocks as Orchard Park won at Hamburg, 55-35.
Williamsville South, which made a run to the Section VI Class A semifinals last year, opened its season with a 45-35 triumph at West Seneca East in an ECIC II clash. Sarah Marcus scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the second half, including 10 in the third quarter, and had four rebounds and four steals.
McKinley wins, now 2-0
Mansa Habeeb scored 25 points as McKinley won its second game with an 81-41 home victory over Dunkirk in boys basketball.
The Macks opened with a win over Maritime Charter and are being coached by Zaire Dorsey, who coached McKinley’s junior varsity teams for eight years under James Daye and has been named the interim varsity coach, as well as former longtime South Park coach Romeo Mc- Kinney.
Daye, who is the subject of a state Education Department investigation, remains on paid administrative leave.
Elsewhere, a pair of juniors in 6-foot-2 Erik Marx (23 points, 11 rebounds) and 6-7 Sean Bellomo (12 points, 14 rebounds) led the way as Lake Shore outscored St. Francis, 16-6, in the game’s final minutes to surge to a 62-54 nonleague victory over its Southtowns’ neighbor in both teams’ first game.
Dan McFarland shot 7 for 12 from the floor to finish with 20 points in St. Mary’s 74-46 win over South Park in the Lancaster Tipoff. The Lancers will face host Lancaster in the final, which beat Cleveland Hill, 68-52, behind J. J. Harrington’s had five blocks and Mark Enders’ 15 points.
Canisius-St. Joe’s duel on ice
Old friends Canisius and St. Joe’s renew the ice version of their rivalry tonight as both teams open their Western New York Varsity Hockey Federation seasons.
The pair meet at 7 in Amherst Pepsi Center and is one of five games on the schedule tonight. Four games will be played at the Pepsi Center, including a 9 p. m. tilt between newcomer Niagara- Wheatfield and perennial contender Williamsville North, with Southtowns rivals Orchard Park and Frontier playing each other at 7:30 p. m. at Bud Bakewell Rink in Riverside.
St. Joe’s, the two-time defending Federation and six-time defending state Catholic champion, will open the season with a new coach behind the bench in former Amherst pilot Richard Crozier — the son of former Sabres head coach Joe Crozier. Crozier takes over for Pete Schneider, who succeeded Joe Wolf as St. Joe’s director of athletics.
St. Joe’s went 2-0-1 against Canisius last year, including a 6-0 win in the Fed semifinals.
