Clarence soccer wins 14th
With the ECIC I championship wrapped up and coming off an emotional win over archrival Williamsville North, Clarence boys soccer coach Mike Silverstein was worried his team might have a letdown in Tuesday’s game against visiting Lancaster. Also, the Red Devils played again without All- Western New York forward Tyler Hamill, who missed his second game in a row with a sprained ankle.
Not to worry. After a scoreless first half, Clarence got goals from Mike Plis and Ben Scalzi and went on to a 2-0 victory to go 14-0 overall, 11-0 in divisional play.
“It was a nice follow up to the win over North,” Silverstein said. “I wanted us to keep playing hard and we did. . . . Lancaster played us really hard in the first half. We had some quality chances [Clarence outshot Lancaster, 16-2, for the game] but we didn’t score until early in the second half.”
Next for the Red Devils will be a game Thursday at Spencerport from Section V.
“We tied them, 1-1, last year. It will be a good test for us going against a Section V team,” Silverstein said.
Elsewhere, first-place Akron (6-1-1) and Wilson (5-2-1) played a 2-2 tie in the Niagara-Orleans League. Cory Baker’s second goal of the game, with 49 seconds left, tied the match. Josh Heusinger and Mike Paylor scored for Wilson.
Lancaster-Frontier clash set
No. 2 large school Lancaster needed to go five games to defeat No. 4 Clarence and hold on to first place in ECIC I girls volleyball. Nicole Texido led the Redskins with 17 kills while Maggie Schrantz had 10 kills and five blocks as Lancaster improved to 11-0 in the division.
No. 3 Frontier (9-1) stayed in contention with a four-game win over visiting Orchard Park, ranked No. 6, as Bethany Fabian had 11 kills and Rachel Stoklosa five blocks.
Frontier and Lancaster will face each other Thursday at Lancaster. The Redskins won a five-game marathon when the teams met Sept. 17.
No. 1-ranked Starpoint completed a season sweep of No. 10 Lake Shore in ECIC II, defeating the Eagles in three games as Sam Palka had 17 kills and Alex Dowell had 11 service points. Veronica Crosby had eight kills and nine blocks for the winners, who are 13-0 overall and 9-0 in divisional play.
WSW streak reaches 45
No. 1-ranked large school West Seneca West stretched its girls cross country dual meet winning streak to 45 and moved closer to a fourth straight ECIC I title with a 17-41 victory over No. 6 Orchard Park. Emily Sullivan led the Indians victory, crossing the line first in 19:44.1.
In ECIC I boys cross country, No. 2- ranked Clarence defeated No. 5 Lancaster, 21-28, as Eric Willis led the Red Devils to victory. Willis was the individual winner in 17:18.
Grand Island girls top NT
Sara McNulty scored three goals and Jenna Raepple, Jamie Raepple and Lexi Amato had single tallies as first-place Grand Island (10-0-1) scored a 6-0 Niagara Frontier League girls soccer victory at North Tonawanda.
Second-place Kenmore West (9-0-1) kept pace with a 3-0 win over Lew-Port. West and GI will meet Oct. 16 in a game that most likely will decide the league title. They tied, 2-2, previously.
