College Report / Griffs drop first at home
Canisius volleyball: The Golden Griffins (7-4) lost for the first time in three home matches this season, dropping a 25-19, 16-25, 23-25, 25-19, 13-15 decision to Missouri-Kansas City (6-10) in the Koessler Center. Freshman Janelle Davis totaled 42 assists and 11 digs and sophomore Renee Lettow had a team-high 11 kills and 16 digs. Senior Sarah Podlesh led all players with a career-high 23 digs. “We need to quickly turn around some of the things we struggled [with] with a conference road weekend (Rider, Loyola, Md.) starting on Saturday,” said Canisius coach Cathy Hummel.
Hilbert soccer: Mike Gabor had two goals and an assist as the Hawks men improved to 2-6 with a 3-1 win over Thiel. Jennifer Wade, Kelly Goodwin and Alyssa Hulbert all scored for the Hawks women (3-5), who beat the same foe by the exact score.
Award: Sue Rocque, director of sports medicine in the University at Buffalo’s division of athletics, will be honored by the Newman Centers at the Convocation and Liturgy of the Holy Spirit at 11:30 a. m. Sunday at St. Joseph University Church, 3269 Main St. She’ll get the Newman Award for her efforts within the university and community service.
