Will North swims past Clarence
Tammy Farkas made the state cut time in several events to lead Williamsville North to a 101-85 win over host Clarence in an ECIC girls swimming opener for both schools. North took six first places and Clarence took seven in the six-place scoring.
Clarence junior Victoria Jacumski broke pool records in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley.
North tops GI in girls soccer
Sure, it’s still early, but any win over the Grand Island (6-1) girls soccer team is an attention- getter.
And Kristi Putzig helped garner some buzz for Williamsville North (6-2) as her goal midway through the first half resulted in a 1-0 triumph in a matchup between ranked large schools.
Putzig blasted a shot from 30 yards out after receiving a feed from the wing by Sarah Bellinger. Courtney Ball and Alex Nero combined for the shutout for the No. 5 Spartans, who dealt Grand Island its first loss of the season. The third-ranked Vikings just missed forcing overtime as they rang a shot off the post with two minutes left.
Williamsville South in first place
Williamsville South took over first place in the ECIC small school standings after dropping Iroquois, 4-1, in field hockey. South was ranked No. 7 in the coaches poll while Iroquois was No. 3.
The game was a rematch of last year’s Section VI championship, won by Iroquois in double overtime.
Brianne Mellon and Blair Pembleton scored to give South a 2-0 lead at halftime. Narrissa Vederra scored to bring Iroquois within 2-1 seven minutes into the second half. Kate Kurzanski and Shannon Martin scored to add to the Billies’ lead.
Williamsville North extended its win streak to 29 games with a 3-1 triumph over Lancaster. Emily Woods scored twice for North. Emily Helwig added her first of the season.
Leeann Stiver had 18 saves for Sweet Home, but Jessica Franklin scored both goals in Pioneer’s 2-0 win over the Panthers.
Orchard Park, North tie, 0-0
Williamsville North and Orchard Park played to a scoreless tie in boys soccer.
The game was for second place behind Clarence in ECIC I. North goalkeeper Andrew Calabrese faced 12 shots while OP’s Sean Conway turned back 14.
“They had two good shots on the top of our 18, and Sean was able to make the save,” said OP coach Josh Dannecker. “It was a very even game.”
Brendan Lawler of Williamsville South scored the game-winning goal with six seconds left on a header off a cross from Zack Schwartz in a 3-2 win over Lake Shore. The Billies improved to 5-1.
