ROCHESTER — The Buffalo Bisons almost stopped the Rochester Red Wings from clinching a winning season Sunday. Almost, but not quite.

Trevor Plouffe’s walk-off hit in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Red Wings to a 5-4 win over the Bisons before 8,423 in Frontier Field. Rochester improved to 73-70 on the season, with only one game left in the International League season.

The Red Wings opened the 10th with a single by Garrett Jones off losing pitcher Jeff Stevens (0-3). Bobby Kielty walked, and Plouffe’s single drove home Jones for the game-winning run. Julio DePaula (3-5) earned the win.

The Red Wings came close to winning in the ninth after Kielty’s eighth-inning homer gave Rochester a 4-3 lead. But the Herd’s Brad Snyder tripled to open the ninth, and Andy Cannizaro singled Snyder home to tie the score.

Rochester spotted the Bisons a 3-0 lead after two innings, and leaky defense was a reason. In the first inning, Josh Barfield singled, moved to third on a Michael Aubrey single, and scored on a passed ball by Red Wings catcher Jeff Christy.

In the second inning, Snyder doubled and later scored on an error by Sergio Santos. Yamid Haad reached second on the error, and scored on Barfield’s single. But the Red Wings scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.

Before the game, the Cleveland Indians traded Buffalo infielder Jorge Velandia to the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations. Velandia hit .209 in 52 games for the Herd.

The Bisons (66-76) will finish the season here this afternoon (1:30 p. m., Radio 1520 AM). Bryan Bullington (5-9) will start.
