The billboard: A daily dose from Bills training camp
One snap away
Tuesday night’s injury to Trent Edwards is a prime example of why J. P. Losman wasn’t actively shopped during the offseason. It also showed why Losman has to prepare like a starter because he’s one snap away.
“That’s what happens when you’re a backup — you never know,” said offensive coordinator Turk Schonert on Wednesday, the Bills’ final day of training camp at St. John Fisher. “All of a sudden your mind’s elsewhere and bang, just like that you’re in a game. So that’s why you’ve got to be focused on every play and concentrating on what you’re doing, and be ready.”
Schonert said he was concerned about Losman’s mental approach to the game prior to training camp.
“Early in camp he was not where he needed to be, but he got into it,” he said. “He got better and got better and got better, and hopefully what happened [Tuesday] will show him. We’ve been telling him that he’s one snap away and that he’s got to be ready, and you can’t let yourself down and you can’t let your teammates down, either. They’re all depending on him and he knows that, so he’ll be fine.”
Edwards is day-to-day after suffering a deep right quad contusion during Tuesday evening’s practice at St. John Fisher.
Edwards, who watched Wednesday’s practice from the sidelines, said there was swelling just above
the knee.
Edwards didn’t know if he
was going to be available for the Bills’ third preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts
on Sunday, a game usually reserved for the starters to
see a significant amount of the reps.
“Sunday is still a long way away and we still have three or four more practices until that game day,”
he said. “I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to get
with the trainers and rehab just as quickly as I can
and get back and help this team win on Sunday.”
