Trent Edwards is just a spectator at practice today with a leg injury

PITTSFORD --Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Trent Edwards is day-to-day after suffering a deep right quad contusion during Tuesday evening's practice at St. John Fisher.

Edwards said Wednesday during the team's last day of training camp at Fisher that he didn't know if he was going to be available for the Bills' third preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Edwards, who watched Wednesday's practice from the sidelines, said there was swelling just above the knee.

"That's going to be occuring over the next couple of days and that's going to tell where I'm at in terms of my progress is the amount of swelling in there," Edwards said. "How quickly they can get it out of there is going to determine how quickly I get back on the field."

Edwards said he was hopeful that he'll be able to play Sunday, a game usually reserved for the starters to see a significant amount of the reps.

"I haven't even thought that far ahead," he said. "Sunday is still a long way away and we still have three or four more practices until that game day. I'm hopeful that I'll be able to get with the trainers and rehab just as quickly as I can and get back and help this team win on Sunday."

The second-year quarterback from Stanford suffered the injury when he collided with running back Marshawn Lynch during 11-on-11 training camp drills Tuesday night. Edwards walked off the field with a trainer and didn't return to practice while Lynch missed a few reps but was able to continue. Lynch complained of soreness in his knee but practiced again Wednesday.

J.P. Losman took the snaps with the first-team offense Wednesday. "You've just got to be ready," Losman said Tuesday after practice. "During this whole situation, I've just kind of been trying to force myself to kind of get ready. It can be tough at times. It's hard at times. But like tonight, it could happen for just a couple of plays. I've got to be ready."
