Orchard Park warms for showdown

Canandaigua next for the Quakers

A pair of sandwich games provided no problem for the Orchard Park lacrosse team.

Senior attackman Drew Belica scored five goals, junior attackman Jeff Tundo added three and senior midfielder Kevin Lalley had two goals and two assists as the Quakers rolled to their sixth consecutive victory, 13-3, at Lancaster in ECIC Division I.

Orchard Park (11-1) defeated North Tonawanda, 25-0, on Tuesday after beating state Class C powerhouse Corning East, 11-8, on Saturday at Alfred University.

Next up is today’s 5 p. m. showdown at St. John Fisher against Canandaigua (13-0), which is ranked seventh among Class A schools in the latest State Sportswriters’ poll, one spot behind the Quakers.

“It’s hard because sometimes you naturally look forward to the bigger games,” said Orchard Park coach Gene Tundo. “Playing Canandaigua should be a really good test for us.”

Zack Hein made 17 saves in goal for Lancaster (4-5).

Clarence softball wins

Megan Rogers hit a solo home run leading off the seventh inning, then Valerie Nappo doubled and came home on an error as Clarence (10-2) scored a 7-6 ECIC I softball victory over Lancaster in the completion of a game suspended on April 29 with the score tied, 5-5.

Alex Stribbing knocked in Kelly Jones from second in the bottom of the seventh but the Redskins fell just short.

Katie Lancelotti finished with a homer, double and four RBIs while Nappo had two doubles among three hits and scored three runs.

In ECIC III, Katie Turvey had a double and triple among three hits and knocked in three runs for Depew (10-2) in its 9-5 triumph over Cheektowaga.

Kristen Weber hit a triple and a homer for Williamsville North (13-5) in its 5-1 ECIC interdivision victory over Amherst.

In the Niagara Frontier League, Alex Peters smacked a three-run triple and Leanna Kozlowski added two hits for Grand Island (9-3) in a 7-5 triumph over Kenmore West.

It was a bad day all around for softball teams in the Ken- Ton School District. A couple of big bats powered Niagara- Wheatfield (10-6) to its 10-1 win over Kenmore East. Kyrstin Lekki went 4 for 4 with an RBI and scored three times for the Falcons and Lynette Maggard had a triple among three hits and scored twice.

In the Monsignor Martin Association, Ashley LaPorta did it all for Mount St. Mary (6-4) in a 2-0 victory over St. Mary’s of Lancaster. LaPorta twirled a four-hitter with five strikeouts and went 3 for 3 at bat with a run.

Megan Smith tossed a two-hitter with six strikeouts and Sarah Horvath was 3 for 4 with an RBI as Immaculata (10-5) blanked Niagara Catholic, 14-0.

Crusaders win 13th

Ned McGrath knocked in the winning run in the top of seventh inning and Steve Gaulin twirled 2c innin 3/4 1/3 of scoreless relief to pick up the win for Canisius (13-2) in a 6-5 nonleague baseball triumph over Sweet Home.

Jim Pernick and Cole Schneider each had three hits and combined for three RBIs for St. Joe’s in a 6-4 MMA victory over Nichols.

In ECIC III, Jordan Cave belted a two-run homer and Justin Hejna had two hits, two runs and two RBIs for Cheektowaga (6-9) in its wild 11-9 victory over Depew.

Domingo Lagares had two doubles and three runs and winning pitcher John Chicone fanned seven for Riverside (9-4) in its 5-4 Cornell Cup triumph over City Honors (9-5).

Rhon Pierce pitched a four-hitter and Nick Vona had three doubles and four RBIs as Newfane (7-2), ranked No. 1 among small schools, whipped the Charter School for Applied Technology, 13-1, in the Niagara- Orleans League.

Watson to Maryland

Sacred Heart senior center Krystal Watson, a fourth-team All-Western New York selection this season, will sign a national letter of intent today to play basketball at Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Watson, who is 6-foot, averaged 12 points and 11 rebounds and was a two-time first-team All-Catholic.

“Of all the big kids I’ve seen this year, by far she had the best footwork around the basket,” said Sacred Heart coach Sister Maria Pares. “She’s very mobile.”

The Hawks, who went 17-13, compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and are coached by former Buffalo State coach Fred Batchelor.

Give it to Canisius

The first doubles team of Matt Gura and Chris Jehle scored the decisive point for Canisius (9-4) in a 3-2 tennis victory over rival St. Joe’s.
