Coming attractions

• Week Two of football kicks off Friday highlighted by Tonawanda’s first home game at the new Clint Small Stadium, which is on the grounds of the high school, when it hosts Class C North newcomer and longtime power Lackawanna at 7 … Also Friday, Lockport is at Orchard Park at 7 while Canisius heads to Rochester for the second straight week when it takes on longtime power and defending Section V Class AA champion Aquinas. On Saturday its a meeting between Section VI and the Monsignor Martin Association, and it will be under the lights: St. Joe’s plays at Clarence at 7 p.m.

• The 19th West Seneca Cross Country Invitational is Saturday at Sunshine Park in West Seneca. A field of 42 from Section VI, Section V, private schools, as well as Canada and Pennsylvania will compete over the 3.1-mile grassy trail course. The first of eight races answers the gun at 10 a.m. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The East Aurora boys and girls will defend their small school titles while the Iroquois girls return as last year’s large school champs.

Also Saturday is the Sixth Red Dragon Invitational at Long Point State Park in Bemus Point. The 5,000 meter course is a combination of woodland trails and rolling lakeside lawn. The small school girls race is at 10:45 a.m., large school girls at 11:15 a.m., small school boys at 11:45 a.m. and large school boys at 12:15 p.m.

• For the first time in the school history, the St. Joe’s volleyball team is ranked No. 1 in the WNY Coaches poll. Its program started in the late-1990s. The Marauders were the last team to be eliminated in last weekend’s Eden Pan-Am Tournament … . Two of this year’s top Class B teams meet on Thursday when No. 4 Eden is at Hamburg at 7 p.m. On Wednesday No. 10 Lancaster hosts Hamburg at 6 p.m. … No. 8 Orchard Park hosts two ranked teams this week in matches starting at 7 p.m. The Quakers play No. 7 West Seneca West on Thursday and No. 10 Lancaster on Friday. … Cheektowaga will host a tournament on Saturday.

• UNDERCLASSMEN OF THE WEEK: The Jim Kelly Football Camp Underclassmen of the Week for Week One are: sophomore quarterback Mike McCarthy of St. Joe’s (offense) and junior linebacker Coyote Sokolski of Iroquois (defense).

• COACH OF THE WEEK: The Week One NFL/Buffalo Bills Coach of the Week is Dennis Gilbert of St. Joe’s. The Marauders handed St. Anthony’s a 20-14 loss. The Long Island visitors entered the season ranked second in the state in the MaxPreps preseason Fab 5.
