The Buffalo Sabres have agreed to a one-year deal with Joe Dipenta, a defenseman likely to give the AHL Portland Pirates a veteran presence.

Dipenta, 30, spent last season in Sweden. The 6-foot-2, 199-pounder has played 174 career NHL games with the Atlanta Thrashers and Anaheim Ducks, recording 23 points. During the Ducks’ Stanley Cup run in 2006-07, Dipenta played 76 regular-season games and 16 in the playoffs.

Dipenta was originally drafted by the Florida Panthers in the third round of the 1998 entry draft with the 61st overall pick.
