Amerks hire Nolan as VP
Ted Nolan will call Western New York home once again.
The former coach of the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders has been named vice president of hockey operations for the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans.
“I’m filled with great pride and honor to be working for the first First Nation- owned professional hockey organization,” said Nolan, whose boss will be fellow First Nations member Curt Styres, owner and CEO of the Americans. “I’m looking forward to the challenges of helping put Rochester back on top.”
Nolan played for the AHL franchise, serving as Amerks’ captain during the 1984-85 season.
The Americans have lost their way the past two seasons, going an AHLworst 53-89-18—including last year as the top minor-league affiliate of the Florida Panthers.
Nolan, who has had several successful stints coaching junior hockey in Canada, won the Jack Adams Trophy as Coach of the Year after guiding the Sabres to the Northeast Division title during the 1996-97 season. He had a 96-89-22 record in two seasons as Sabres coach but he wasn’t retained following the 1996-97 season.
