N. Y. Rangers 4, Montreal 3 (SO): Chris Drury scored the deciding goal in the shootout for New York, which blew three one-goal leads in regulation. Henrik Lundqvist, who made his 60th start of the season, stopped Andrei Kostitsyn on Montreal’s first attempt after making 26 traditional saves. New York moved one point ahead of Montreal in a tightly contested race for the final playoff spots in the East.
Edmonton 2, St. Louis 1 (SO): Ales Kotalik, the former Buffalo Sabre, scored the shootout winner for the Oilers, who ended a skid of three consecutive overtime losses and moved into a tie with the Nashville Predators for seventh in the West with 75 points.
Pittsburgh 6, Atlanta 2: NHL scoring-leader Evgeni Malkin tied a career-high with five points to surpass 100 for the second consecutive season for the Penguins. Malkin, who missed practice Monday due to illness, had two goals and three assists to give him 102 points this season.
Washington 3, Florida 0: Jose Theodore made 19 saves in his second shutout of the season to lift the Capitals. Florida dropped a fourth straight game for the first time since late December.
Toronto 4, Tampa Bay 3 (SO): John Mitchell, who scored the Maple Leafs’ first goal in the second period, netted the winner in the shootout. Toronto avoided a four-game, season-series sweep by the Lightning, who outscored the Maple Leafs 16-10 this season and had won six straight against them.
Minnesota 3, Colorado 2 (SO): The win moved the Wild past St. Louis and Edmonton and into a tie with Dallas for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot.
Vancouver 4, Dallas 2: Ryan Kesler and Mats Sundin each had a goal and an assist, helping the Canucks set a franchise record with their 10th straight home win. Vancouver moved into a tie with Chicago for fourth place in the West.
Phoenix 4, San Jose 3: Shane Doan scored on the backhand as he was being tackled from behind by defenseman Rob Blake with 26.9 seconds remaining.
Detroit 3, Philadelphia 2: Chris Osgood made 24 saves for the Red Wings, who haven’t lost to Philadelphia at home since Nov. 4, 1988 (14-0-2).
