Washington 3, Boston 1: Capitals goalie Brent Johnson shut down the Eastern Conference’s top offense. The Bruins, who have the most goals and the best record in the East, had won five consecutive games.

N. Y. Rangers 3, Atlanta 2 (OT): New York’s Scott Gomez scored 15 seconds into overtime, taking advantage of goaltender Johan Hedberg’s mishandling of the puck.

New Jersey 4, Pittsburgh 1: Scott Clemmensen, who has emerged as the Devils’ go-to goalie with Martin Brodeur sidelined until March with a biceps injury, improved to 7-1 in his last eight starts. The Devils won for the eighth time in nine games.

Detroit 4, Calgary 3 (OT): Nicklas Lidstrom scored 3:50 into overtime to complete the Red Wings’ comeback from a two-goal deficit. Brian Rafalski had a goal and an assist, and Valtteri Filppula and Henrik Zetterberg also scored for Detroit. Johan Franzen added two assists, and Ty Conklin made 29 saves.

Chicago 2, Ottawa 0: Patrick Kane scored his 13th goal and Cristobal Huet stopped 23 shots to earn his first shutout with the Blackhawks.

Phoenix 5, Dallas 3: Martin Hanzal scored twice, including the third-period tiebreaking goal for the Coyotes. Before the game, Stars executives met to discuss what to do next with suspended forward Sean Avery. No decisions were announced.

Anaheim 4, St. Louis 2: With Andy McDonald (fractured leg), Paul Kariya (hip injury) and T. J. Oshie (ankle sprain) all sidelined, the Blues (12-11-3) had scored 17 times in their previous five games. They played the Ducks even until Brendan Morrison scored the go-ahead goal during a scramble in front of the net with 2:37 remaining. St. Louis goalie Manny Legace left after being kneed in the head late in the first period, and Chris Mason replaced him.

Around the rinks

Colorado Avalanche: Team captain Joe Sakic, already out with back problems, broke three fingers on his left hand when he tried to clear snow from the machine at his home and will be out three months.
