NEWARK, N.J. — The Sabres' never-ending quest to get healthy remains just that. Buffalo suffered another unexpected absence Tuesday, losing center Jochen Hecht to a concussion. He took part in the morning skate prior to the 2-1 shootout win over New Jersey, but he quickly began to feel terrible.

Hecht visited with doctors, who diagnosed him with his second concussion of the season and third in less than a year.

"He's not good," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said after the game. "He's got concussion symptoms. Wasn't feeling bad [Monday]. He took a hit from [T.J.] Oshie in St. Louis, kind of an elbow — and came off [Tuesday] and he was a mess. He couldn't focus. Emotionally, he was really unstable. He's in a tough place right now. We're worried. ... To come off and be the way he was tells you that there's something wrong."

Hecht missed the opening 20 games after getting concussed during the first practice of training camp. He missed most of the final two months last season after suffering a concussion and a setback when he tried to return too early.

The 34-year-old, in the final year of his contract, has four goals and eight points in 22 games.

Hecht's absence left the Sabres with 11 forwards. Ruff dressed seven defensemen and used blue-liner Marc-Andre Gragnani as the left winger on a line with center Luke Adam and right wing Cody McCormick.

Robyn Regehr played for a few bad teams in Calgary. He's on one right now in Buffalo.

What he learned during the previous down seasons was teams can't take shortcuts if they want to turn around their fortunes.

"You have to go out there and play the way that we're supposed to, stick to that system, to the game plan, the system that the coaches always talk about," Regehr said in Prudential Center. "You've just got to do it and do it well and do it hard. Over time, things will go your way. It's hard because when things aren't going well, you have to work extra hard to get it done and turn it in your favor."

Regehr returned to the Sabres' lineup after missing four games with a shoulder injury. He wasn't scheduled to come back until next week, allowing him to recuperate during the All-Star break, but he said the injury really improved the last couple of days.

"What I like is being around the guys and trying to be part of the solution," he said. "The big thing with the team is you have to have the right mentality, and that's go out there and believe in what you're doing and going out there and executing. ... We need to do a better job of that here. Hopefully, we can get on track with that."

Ruff said defenseman Brayden McNabb, who has been sidelined since suffering a concussion Jan. 13, has begun skating. McNabb was selected to play in Monday's American Hockey League All-Star Game, but the league announced Tuesday that Rochester forward Zack Kassian will take McNabb's place.

Kassian, who has three goals and six points in 18 games with Buffalo, has 10 goals and 21 points in 25 games with the Amerks.

. . . .

Devils defenseman Henrik Tallinder, who played eight seasons with the Sabres, missed his third straight game of what could be a two-month absence. He has been diagnosed with acute thrombophlebitis in the lower left leg, which essentially means he has a blood clot.

"I don't think anyone expected it would be as serious as it turned out to be," New Jersey coach Pete DeBoer said.

Tallinder will be out six to eight weeks. He has no goals, six assists and a minus-11 rating in 39 games during his second season with the Devils.

I don't think Hecht could be traded--no one will want a player who's had three concussions in one year. The best thing for Hecht may be to retire at the end of the season so he can recover from the concussions and enjoy time with his family. He'll be missed.

Darcy is a nice guy, he will do nothing with Hecht. If it were the Flyers they would wait for him to be healthy and dump him in the ECHL for purse holders. nice GMs finish last.

Love everything that Regehr said. This guy is a proven veteran and he's saying all the right things. He knows what needs to happen. He did a great job calming down the defense core against the Devils, along with Ehrhoff. I think Lindy needs to slap an "A" on his jersey. Should've been there from Day 1, instead of "putting the faith in the core." I'd seriously consider giving him the "C" next season, even though I think it has done wonders for Pommer (this is the most consistent hockey I've ever seen him play).

Great quotes by Regehr:

"You've just got to do it and do it well and do it hard. Over time, things will go your way. It's hard because when things aren't going well, you have to work extra hard to get it done and turn it in your favor."

"The big thing with the team is you have to have the right mentality, and that's go out there and believe in what you're doing and going out there and executing. ... We need to do a better job of that here."

Jochen, get well. Truly well.
Hecht is a player that hasn't been able to play his natural position in years now. He's a wing that can play center. He's always been excellent defensively, and has been on the top PK pairing for eons. He'll also get you 15-20 goals a year. Gotta love the "Wacky German bank shots." Wish Ehrhoff knew about them...

One thing Myers is really good at (maybe the only thing) is helping the opposing team score goals, if he isn't screening the our goalie, he's coughing up the puck and hanging the goalie out to dry.

I feel for Hecht and he is a good player - a playmaker who has a history of scoring goals from bad angles. The Sabres obtained Jochen for draft picks (31st and 36th) and over the years he has served the Sabres well - playing where needed.

It seems this year there is a high number of concussions and while the league appointed Shanahan as VP of Player Safety - there appears to be more suspensions

I'd swear most of the team has ongoing concussion symptoms. Especially confusion (example: too many ice in almost every game), memory loss (forgot how to check and score), altered level of consciousness (lackluster effort, hard to arouse - even by angry coach), lack of alertness (especially on defense), fatigue (usually sets in after first period), changes in vision (that blank stare when they are losing a game), headaches ( if the're not getting them, they are giving them to their coaches and fans),
vomiting (could be the food at FNC), walking problems (in their case skating - or lack of it).
Hecht is in his final year of his contract, with the way things are going why suffer throught the rest of this season and the hassles of getting resigned, traded or demoted. Who would want to be remembered as a player in the Sabres worst team in a decade or probably their history.

I would take goose back for 1 million but 2.5 million is just crazy. Let him test the waters and see if any team gives him crazy money. When he comes back with his tail between his legs offer 3 years at mill, but remember we have a GM who gave McCormick 1.2 mill a year for 3 years and Matt Ellis a 1 way deal for next year.

MATT TRIPPI, PALMYRA, NY on Wed Jan 25, 2012 at 11:21 AM

I'm not trying to be nasty - but Hecht plays like something is wrong with him. He's slow and cautious. His contract is up in April, so I expect he will be retiring.

PAUL RATH, ORCHARD PARK, NY on Wed Jan 25, 2012 at 11:00 AM

Yea....this following the system is killing me. Hecht should hang up his skates now before he seriously get hurts. We need to look for 2 centers to help this team. Keep Adams with Vanek and Pommy....it worked earlier so keep them together and let them get use to each other.

Keep Goose.....but at a lower price. He's the only center would can win a face-off (when it matters) and he's one of the few softee's who will actually check somebody. Use him on the 3rd or 4th line.

Bring up some of the younger players and sit the overpriced forwards for a game or 2 or more, who couldn't hit an empty right now! Lindy.....let them (the youngsters) learn from their mistakes, not bench them for making them....your not going anywhere, although millions are wondering why??? So let's get ready for next year. No playoffs this year, but we're only 2 centers, 2 defensemen and (maybe) 3 wingers from being a serious playoff contender. Maybe some of those players are at Rochester!!!
