NEWARK, N.J. — There was a strange noise coming from the Sabres' dressing room Tuesday night. It was, believe it or not, laughter.

There was an unfamiliar look on the players' faces, too. They were smiling. Honest to goodness, they were actually smiling.

For once, they had a reason to laugh, grin and feel good about things. For once, they won.

Buffalo ended a pair of long losing streaks with a 2-1 shootout victory over New Jersey, stopping slides of five games overall and 12 straight away from home. Aside from some of Ryan Miller's saves, it wasn't the prettiest of victories, but it was definitely worthy of a good mood as the team broke up for the All-Star break.

"It's been a tough run," coach Lindy Ruff said. "Everybody knows that. Every player felt it. Everyone around the team has felt it.

"To finally win one, at least you can feel good going into the break. This would be a really tough break if you walk into the break with even a shootout loss, but this picks your spirits up. It creates hope. You heard it. It's the first time in a while the guys have really felt good."

They want to carry the good vibe into their long respite. The Sabres don't play again until Tuesday in Montreal, giving them a chance to heal their battered bodies, psyches and egos.

"Mentally, I think it's good for everybody," Miller said. "I think guys stay away from the rink a little bit, and when we come back we'll be ready to get some work done."

Miller sent the Sabres into the break with a First Star performance. He stopped 27 of 28 shots through regulation and overtime, giving his offensively challenged club a chance in the shootout. Jason Pominville, the Sabres' third shooter, kept the team alive by beating Martin Brodeur to answer Ilya Kovalchuk's goal. Nathan Gerbe ended it on Buffalo's next attempt.

"I haven't been able to grind a game out here in about a month, so I'm happy to get it," said Miller, who earned just his fourth win in his last 14 starts.

The goalie's best save came 26 seconds into overtime. Bryce Salvador set up a driving Kovalchuk at the top of the crease, but Miller slid across to get his glove on the attempt that seemed destined for the open cage.

"Those are the type of saves that turn it around for you," Ruff said.

The Sabres opened the scoring for the second straight game. It came courtesy of the kind of bounce that has been going against them most of the season.

Gerbe skated down the left side of the New Jersey zone and fired a slap shot high over the net. The puck clanked off the back glass, with Brodeur and the crowd of 13,735 expecting it to roll to the far wall.

Instead, the puck took a weird hop to the right side of the crease. Sabres defenseman Jordan Leopold easily poked it past an unsuspecting Brodeur with 3:26 left in the first.

It was one of just 14 shots for the Sabres, who tied their season low.

"We did some better things," Pominville said. "You've got to be responsible defensively to win games, and I thought we did a better job."

The second period belonged to the Devils, thanks in part to two power plays. They scored on one. Devils defenseman Kurtis Foster blasted a slap shot from the point. It struck Tyler Myers below the belt. As he crumpled to the ice, New Jersey captain Zach Parise scooped up the loose puck in the slot and quickly slid it to Patrik Elias at the right side of the net for a tap-in with 9:38 left.

Miller made sure the Devils didn't score again, allowing the Sabres to leave Prudential Center on a high.

"There's a lot of work to do when we come back," Gerbe said. "Guys have to enjoy this time and get some rest and get healthy and get ready."

I'm sure Darcy Regier likes to think he's the smartest guy in the room.

Truth is, however: Regier is the dimmest bulb in the box.

Can you believe that Tampa Bay, Carolina and Anaheim have won cups before Buffalo? Very sad, what's next Nashville is going to win a cup and have a lower budget.

I can't believe Darcy said the other day he wants the NHL to change the rules about sending cash in a player trade, I can see it now, we trade 10 million cash, Roy, first rd pick to the Avalanche for Paul Stastny. maybe the league should just get rid of the salary cap and Buffalo can be like the Yankees and we can have a 200 million dollar payroll and out spend all the other teams?

An event like what Columbus fans are planning was needed at HSBC Arena(when it was called that) after Messrs. Drury and Briere left almost 5 years ago.

Ruff and Regier... OUT!!!

This is why I like Darcy .................. things could be worse.............. we could be Jackets fans.

AMEN, Matt Tripi... AMEN!!!!

In connection with your mention of "small-market" teams and cities... Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, and Denver/Colorado: these are examples of "small-markets" that have seen BOTH their NHL AND their NFL teams win the ultimate prize!

What excuse do the Bills' and Sabres' "powers-that-be" REALLY have?

And on their win at NJ... as I posted elsewhere: Just WHERE was this kind of performance... just WHERE was this type of execution and precision BEFORE, when it was NEEDED?

LLOYD MARSHALL, LOCKPORT, NY on Thu Jan 26, 2012 at 07:22 AM

So the bluejackets fans are protesting out front of the arena over the all star break to voice their opinion to oust team president and gm. Is that what its gonna take here for something to be done???

Darcy Regier is the guy who makes the first round draft pick and he has said that Lindy helps him with bringing in players. Darcy drafted Jiri Novotny and the scouting report on him was "he can't shoot or score, he doesn't like rough games but he was the captain of a team once". Why even waste a draft choice on a guy in the first round with zero offensive talent?

This is the same GM who gave Kalinin 8 seasons before he finally figure out he was total garbage.

Darcy had spent to the cap limit during the Presidents trohpy year and he had this defense.

Teppo-who he gave a $600,000 raise even though he didn't finish the season before

Kalinin-complete waste of roster spot, soft and weak

Spacek- brought in for offense but had ZERO POINTS in the playoffs

Campbell- good player but weak in own zone against big forwards

Tallinder- not a big hitter but solid

Lydman- above average in D zone

Does this look like a defense that is cup worthy? He could have traded for a better D man, Max had tons of value(over point per game and was team leading scorer the year before) and could have been used to bring in a better D man.

Plenty of coaches never have the talent Ruff has had with the Sabres and been fired. Lindy has had Hasek and Miller and the Sabres were at or near the cap limit every season except 2005. Are you claiming that the 1975 Washington Capitals coach should have kept his job for 15 years because the poor guy didn't have the talent, life isn't fair boo hoo. Golisano spend to the cap limit in 2006-07 and was very close within 2-3 million every single season after. Is Lindy a "good" coach? Sure he is a good coach but we are sick of hearing his silly excuses and nonsense ideas about how to run pps.

The Sabres had the most wins from 2005-2007 and he had a loaded roster and he didn't win the cup, I know it's not easy to win a cup and coaches get fired all the time when they win the cup and miss the playoff 2 seasons after, like I said life isn't fair. When did Buffalo become the excuse capital of the sports world and when did all of a sudden we feel "just lucky to have a team"?

Let's shoot for a higher goal from now on, no longer do we say things like...
1.we are small market we can't win
2. if we don't make a profit the team will move
3. we should just be lucky to have a team
4. we like hard working players with no skill(why can't we like hard working players who have tons of skill?)
5. Lindy and Darcy are nice guys so we can never fire them, the poor guys.

Did anybody else see Jeep's reaction when they finished the SO line-up? It was pretty dramatic and it seemed as if he and Ruff disagreed. I bet Patrick didn't like Lindy's move to put Boyes in. I can understand trying to show confidence in your players, but at what risk when you needed a win that badly. And I also speculate that Jeep would have preferred Gerbe (who ended up sending it home!). Who else?

It was great to see Miller back in form! The scale could tip. I know a lot of you out there don't believe in the talent, but when they get the chemisrty right this team will be dangerous.

Imagine how good they would be with a top-notch centerman.
