DETROIT — Ownership and management apparently put together a flawed team over the summer. Injuries have decimated the product, the players left behind have badly underachieved and the NHL's senior-most coach has had absolutely no answers.

This is life in Sabreland, heading into the abyss of the nether regions of the Eastern Conference.

The Buffalo Sabres hit a new low Monday night in Joe Louis Arena as they were completely outclassed in a 5-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

The Red Wings coasted to their 15th straight home win, breaking their club record of 14 set in 1965. The Sabres, meanwhile, extended their inglorious franchise mark with their ninth straight regulation loss on the road. And remember, this was just game two of seven straight on the road, with a visit to Chicago coming Wednesday night.

"The injury excuse isn't what this team is about," said captain Jason Pominville. "We have enough guys in the lineup to win games and we're not doing it right now. We have to find a way."

Owner Terry Pegula is on this trip and got a first-hand look at the mess that has become of his millions. He was grim-faced as he entered the locker room with senior advisors Ken Sawyer and Cliff Benson, who made sure Pegula was doing no interviews when a couple of reporters approached in the press box after the final horn.

Todd Bertuzzi and Pavel Datsyuk put together three-point games for the Red Wings and goaltender Jimmy Howard made 27 saves for his fourth shutout and league-leading 27th win of the season. Ryan Miller, meanwhile, gave up five goals on 14 shots and was yanked after Bertuzzi and Darren Helm scored 13 seconds apart early in the second period. That capped a rush of four Detroit goals in a 6:21 span covering the first two periods.

Not what Miller wanted in his home state while his family was in the stands watching him face his brother, Drew.

"It's embarrassing," Miller said. "I got family and friends here. Everybody came to watch Drew and I play. At least they got to watch Drew perform."

Pegula and president Ted Black have steadfastly maintained coach Lindy Ruff, who has been behind the bench since 1997, is not in danger of being replaced. Still, this one has to be one of the worst performances in Ruff's tenure.

It thus would appear the onus remains on General Manager Darcy Regier to author some kind of shakeup via trade if the season is to be saved. Miller didn't agree with that notion.

"If you guys really think there's going to be any kind of trade made anywhere that's going to affect this team anymore than we can affect it in this locker room, you guys are just ... I don't know," said an emotional Miller, his jaw clenched and his lip quivering. "I don't know what to think because there's no such trade.

"There's not ever going to be a trade in the history of the NHL that's going to affect anything like that. There's no chance anybody comes into this team and just shakes it up or we can even move multiple players and get any kind of return.

"If you want to just destroy a team and go out and be reckless and do something, yeah. Then there's going to be new guys in here. But other than that, this locker room is going to be pretty much the same, if not completely the same and we gotta find it from in here [points to chest]. You can't sit and wait for somebody else to [bleeping] do it."

Of course, Miller has to realize teams make trades all the time. But the Sabres are admittedly in back-up-the-truck mode. The forwards are soft, the defense turns the puck over with impunity and the goaltending can't cover for the mistakes.

"It's not good hockey. It's not good from top down," Miller said. "I need to be better. I can't seem to find a night where I can get in a groove. I don't know what the hell it is."

Certainly, Pegula didn't run his payroll to the salary cap to see his team implode to the bottom of the East. At this point, the Sabres are closer to 15th place (five points) than to the No. 8 playoff spot (seven).

The Sabres made their requisite number of turnovers and bad decisions, with defensemen Jordan Leopold and Mike Weber getting nailed with minus-4 ratings. Leopold overplayed a long Datsyuk pass, allowing Johan Franzen to score at 18:11 of the first period and give the Wings a 2-0 lead. Nicklas Lidstrom's tap-in with 17 seconds left made it 3-0 in a period where each team had 11 shots on goal.

"It was a shot in the gut, the end of the first period," said a terse Ruff, who had few explanations. "It's not easy to stomach."

Sure had to be tough for Pegula to watch.

"He's done more than his part," Pominville said. "He's given everything to us to have success. He remodeled the whole arena basically. He went out and has been really good with our families, really good with the players. It's up to us to give back. Right now, we're just not doing a good enough job."

Hey, Matt... I posted this already elsewhere, but it deserves posting again.

Even though it's still some years ago, I still fault Darcy Regier for the state of the Sabres as they are now. His lack of positive action between the summers of 2006 and 2007 are what have brought the Sabres to this point.

If I were Sabres GM after the 2006 Cup run, here are my actions:

-Re-sign Messrs. Gratton, McKee, DuMont, and Grier.
-Go after Doug Weight, and attract a solid defenseman(wasn't Zdeno Chara a free agent after the 2005-06 season?).
-Actively pursue a contract extension for Chris Drury.
-Even-up trade of Martin Biron to Florida for Edd Belfour.
-Even-up trade of Danny Briere to New Jersey for Scott Gomez.
-Wait for trade deadline in Feb. '07 and trade Tom Vanek to Edmonton for Adam Smyth.
-Maybe also trade Teppo Numminen and one or two others who may be FA's in 2007 to different teams for draft choices or other comparable players.

We might not have the "young core" we see now, granted... but it would likely put Buffalo into the Stanley Cup winner's circle already.

I could careless if a team is good the first 10 games, it's the playoffs that count, Buffalo looked bad in the playoffs the last two seasons and the Flyers had horrible goalies and No Chris Pronger. The sabres didn't look like world beaters the first ten games, they had wins but it was ugly and the team still wasn't showing up to play hard for full games. That is the key here, Buffalo teams under Lindy the last 5 years are not showing up to play hard, it's either him or new players or both. Darcy wants to just add to a core that can't even win a playoff round. Big deal Boyes will be gone next season, he will just add another 4 mill bust and blow some draft pick again. Darcy has made some bad trades lately, Rivet he gave up way too much for a guy who was shot, Boyes, torres etc all bad. The only guys he wants to trade are ones who will be UFAs after season, why would a team waste the time with a trade when they can just sign them? Try trading a player who has value still instead of letting them walk out the door for nothing in return.

Hawks won, 6-2. YAY!!!

Bad news: Pat Kane, S. Buffalo native, didn't get even one point.

Then again... Chicago Blackhawks, just like the Detroit Red Wings: BREEDS APART from the Buffalo Sabres!!

Brian Horvath - you are right: this team is the same as the last 4 years. It only looks a bit worse now, because Miller is no longer saving games for them, as he did in years past. The wins are fewer and the losing streaks are longer.

This means the average players we have had for the last 4 years, have now become depressed and confused average players - which in the end makes them quite bad players.

You can tell that there is little left to write since the B News hasn't had a fresh article on the Sabs since Tuesday's game but this blog has really worked through the issues. This is so complicated; we are in a small market but our owner has really deep pockets. At the end of the day here's what T Black and D R need to compete: they need to have virtually 6 NHL caliber lines and they have to be able to park 2 to 2 and 1/2 of these lines in the AHL . I've said this before Lou Lamarillo once said "you need 10 defenseman to win a Stanley Cup. We now have an owner that has enough cash to park NHL calibre forwards and D men until needed; and every team needs them.
That is why Vancouver, SJ, Detroit and Pittsburg can maintain a competitive team regardless of the string of injuries, that's why Minnesota, Tampa Bay and Buffalo were all competitive but could NOT sustain because they were not deep enough. Does our captain lead? NO, is our goaltending really bad? Yes. At the end of the day those issues can be fixed but our real problem has been lack of overall depth. The fact is that our GM/scouting dept has run on a shoe string for years and what we see now is the end result. We are too thin and yes we haven't been lucky. Some teams that drafted behind us are playing their #1 pick, our 2011 is over in Finland. Our 2010 isn't ready either. But they are cooking and will be part of that eventual solid 28 man team like the good organizations carry.
We got blinded by that fantastic run last year; it was glorious but it really was one of those situations where every single thing went right, and it superfically covered up the problems that are out in open now. I hate it now but I'm going to love the ride up the ladder. GO SABRES

As far as "blowing up the team, over a couple years, absolutely. You can want to sell everything you have but there has to be someone who needs it and is willing to buy it. How many GM's are in the market for a head injured 6.25mil goalie?

JEFFREY GIANCARLO, LANCASTER, NY on Wed Jan 18, 2012 at 03:33 PM

How can anyone compare a franchise like Detroit to Regier'sperformance. Darcy builds your 2005-2007 cup contending team prior to Golisano/Quinn..Golisano/Quinn stripped the scouting budget. They wanted a sellable team, not a winner. Maybe some don't get what that means... I can draw some layman's terms for you...
The GM is a deer hunter... Golisano/Quinn said give me back your rifle and scope here is a BB gun and a treestand next to an idiot blowing an airhorn. Detroit hunters are all prepped with state of the art weaponary and scouted land...does that help some of you. Your expectation is ..well, a GM is a GM and no other factors.
Some more layman examples... Hendricks motorsports tells Jimmie Johnson his car is fine so he will no longer need a pit crew or garage. Johnson races his depleting car and then when Hendricks has money to reinvest they tell Johnson to take a hike because he hasn't won.
Pittsburgh didn't have to rebuild! Thats right, they were WINNING last place. Almost enough to be considered a dynasty!!! Do your homework Randy.
Records:
01-02 : 28-wins
02-03 : 27 wins
03-04 : 23 wins
05-06 : 22 wins
As far as DAN FOY, Dan your posts are very much appreciated as well as acknowledgment of your understanding that championships are not built overnight. Most appreciated from your posts is the class you exude.

JEFFREY GIANCARLO, LANCASTER, NY on Wed Jan 18, 2012 at 03:24 PM

Just for the record:

2002 - Pittsburgh missed playoffs and finished tied for third last in Conference
2003 - Pittsburgh finished last in the Conference
2004 - Pittsburgh finished last in the NHL
2005 - lockout
2006 - Pittsburgh finished last in the Conference and had highest goals against in the NHL

They rebuilt though strong draft picks and solid ownership.

* They also, during this period, went through a couple coaching changes and a GM change as well.

FRANK KARAM, KENMORE, NY on Wed Jan 18, 2012 at 03:22 PM

Dan Foy, are you an idiot or just stupid. Buffalo has been getting worse since the end of last year. Players don't respond to the coach anymore, Miller doesn't care, and Detroit and Pittsburgh didn't take years to achieve, they rebuild each year and have constantly been in the hunt the past 20 years. Do you understand the word rebuild, apparently not. Coaches do not see the underachieving thats been going on this past year since i assume every one thinks their safe.

RANDY GREENE, OWINGS, MD on Wed Jan 18, 2012 at 02:47 PM

" And when you're cleared to play, it's like, "It's been seven days. You're fine. You're clear and you should be fine." Well, your brain controls everything in your body, even emotions. Like ... you feel depressed. You feel like you can't focus and obviously if you go on the ice and try to play hockey at the highest level, as a goaltender with pucks coming at you and trying to maintain awareness and read the plays, it's definitely not a great situation."
