Carolina 5, Vancouver 3: Erik Cole scored three goals and the Hurricanes ended their five-game losing streak.
Edmonton 3, Dallas 2 (SO): Shawn Horcoff scored in the fifth round of the shootout and the Oilers got a rare road win.
St. Louis 5, Los Angeles 4 (SO): Paul Kariya scored two goals in the third period and the Blues got goals from Andy McDonald and Brad Boyes in the first two rounds of the shootout.
Boston 7, Toronto 2: Marc Savard scored three goals and the Bruins ruined Phil Kessel’s return. He was traded to Toronto in the offseason.
Atlanta 2, Florida 1 (SO): Rich Peverley scored the winning goal in a shootout to lift the Thrashers. The Panthers have lost seven of their last eight.
Washington 8, Philadelphia 2: Peter Laviolette lost his debut with the Flyers as Tomas Fleischmann and Mike Green scored two goals apiece for the Capitals. New Jersey 4, Detroit 3 (SO): The Red Wings rallied from two goals down to force overtime, but Patrik Elias scored in the fourth round of a shootout for the Devils.
Tampa Bay 4, N. Y. Islanders 0: Rookie defenseman Victor Hedman scored his first NHL goal and Mike Smith made 30 saves.
Chicago 2, Pittsburgh 1 (OT): Kris Versteeg scored 2:38 into overtime and the Blackhawks ended the Pens’ home win streak at five.
Around the rinks
AHL: Providence 4, Portland 3: Cody Mc- Cormick, Derek Whitmore and Kyle Wanvig struck for the Pirates, who saw their 11-game point streak (7-0-3-1) come to an end.
