Calgary Flames: Theo Fleury’s comeback attempt ended when he was released by the Flames on Friday. Fleury was trying to return to the NHL six years after he was suspended indefinitely for violating the NHL’s substance abuse policy. He had a goal and four points in four exhibition games and also scored a shootout winner, but that wasn’t enough to earn a place among the Flames’ top forwards.
New Jersey Devils: The Devils have a Niedermayer again. Veteran center Rob Niedermayer, the brother of former Devils defenseman Scott Niedermayer, signed a one-year contract with the team, adding depth to a squad that lost John Madden to free agency over the summer. The 34- year-old Niedermayer is entering his 16th NHL season. He had 14 goals with Anaheim last season.
St. Louis Blues: Added experience to their young defensive corps by signing veteran defenseman Darryl Sydor to a one-year contract. Sydor has played for five NHL clubs during his 18 NHL seasons. He started 2008-09 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but was traded to the Dallas Stars early in the season.
Vancouver Canucks: Released forward Mark Parrish from a training camp tryout contract. He had two assists in four preseason games before being cut. He was trying to re-ignite a career that saw him average 26 goals a season for the New York Islanders from 2001-06.
