Lawn lore

Summer lawn fanatics are cautioned about the use of fertilizers containing phosphorus, the middle number in fertilizer mixes. For decades, 5-10-5 had been the standard mix for yard and garden plantings each growing season.

Department of Environmental Conservation studies have shown “too much phosphorus is harmful to the state’s water resource.” In 2012 a Dishwater Detergent and Nutrient Runoff Law was established, prohibiting the use of phosphorus except when a new lawn is being established or a soil test shows the lawn lacks phosphorus.

For more details on phosphorous/lawn-fertilizer uses and restrictions, go to dec.ny.gov/chemical/67239.

Boater lore

For boaters, a new law effective May 1 this year requires all persons born on or after May 1, 1996 to complete an approved boater-education course to operate a motorboat in New York State.

Two approved courses are offered this coming week. Gander Mountain at 880 Young St. in the Town of Tonawanda has a course Saturday. For details, call 616-0038 and ask for Michael Abad. Niagara Scuba Center at 2105 Military Road in Niagara Falls holds a class on July 27. For details, check with Michael McCormick at 316-8259.
