Legislation passed earlier this year will prohibit the hunting of Eurasian boars on hunting preserves in 2015.

The Department of Environmental Conservation is now accepting comments on establishing a ban on hunts of free-ranging boars that have been found in the wilds since 2000, mainly in Central New York counties such as Tioga, Cortland, Onondaga, Clinton, Sullivan and Delaware.

While sport hunting has proved to be a positive factor in controlling populations of deer and bear, escaping wild boar herd often disperse when one boar in a pack is harvested. That single kill often results in animals scattering and becoming more difficult to remove, according to DEC Commissioner Joe Martens.

To view the proposed regulations, go to dec.ny.gov/regulations/34113. To offer comments until Jan. 25, email WildlifeRegs@gw.dec.state.ny.us.
