With passage in the governor’s budget in April of crossbow legalization for hunters in New York State, the Department of Environmental Conservation on Tuesday began a 45-day public-comment period.

DEC officials did not schedule public hearings for discussion of the proposed rules and regulations, which stipulate detailed seasonal and regional open and closed times and places for crossbow use.

Brian Swift at the DEC office in Albany can provide a complete text of the proposed rules and will gather public comments and analyses on all aspects of the new crossbow regulations.

Crossbows recall

PSE (Precision Shooting Equipment) announced a recall of about 2,800 TAC Elite, TAC Ordnance and Enigma crossbows that were ordered from catalogs between June and November of 2013.

These models can fire an arrow without the trigger being pulled. Consumers should stop using the recalled crossbows immediately and return them to PSE for free repair. For details, call 800-477-7789, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or visit pse-archery.com.

QDMA Field Day

The Greater Rochester Southern Tier Branch of Quality Deer Management Association will hold its 2014 Field Day June 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a site near the Monroe/Livingston County border disclosed to signed-up registrants.

Exhibits and presentations include Erich Long of Drumming Log Wildlife Management, Brad Sisson on scouting cameras, experts on timber and food plot development and more information-based activities.

The $25 cost includes an association membership plus lunch and materials fee.
