In front of newly appreciative fans, Andy Roddick beat Igor Andreev, 6-1, 7-6 (3), to reach the third round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

The fifth-seeded American said he was “humbled” by the reaction of fans both at the All England Club and back home in North America to his thrilling five-set loss to Roger Federer at Wimbledon.

“During my career I’ve been portrayed as every type of person—good, bad, ugly, rude, nice—and this is the first time it’s been presented in the light of a hardworking, everyday Joe type of tennis player trying to make good,” Roddick said. “All the while the meat and potatoes of who I am have probably stayed the same.”

Also, Rafael Nadal won his first match since May and reached the third round as his opponent, David Ferrer, retired with a left knee injury.

In Mason, Ohio, Kim Clijsters played her second competitive match in more than two years and reached the third round of the Cincinnati Open with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Patty Schnyder on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Clijsters is scheduled to meet sixth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova in the next round, with a possible quarterfinal match looming against Dinara Safina.
