American League

Oakland 8, Cleveland 4: Mark Ellis homered to break the A’s franchise record for second baseman (77) as Oakland won their sixth straight game. The Indians are 4-17 in their last 21.

Boston 11, Baltimore 5: Jon Lester won his sixth straight decision and Josh Reddick, J. D. Drew and Brian Anderson homered for the Red Sox.

Tampa Bay 4, Toronto 0: Matt Garza struck out 10 while stopping a personal nine-game winless streak and the Rays scored all four runs in the first inning.

Texas 3, L. A. Angels 2: Hank Blalock homered to help lift Texas’ slumping offense and Scott Feldman picked up his 17th victory for the Rangers.

Chicago White Sox 13, Kansas City 3: Jake Peavy won his White Sox debut. He allowed three runs and three hits over five innings in his first start in over three months and Chicago got a grand slam from Carlos Quentin.

National League

San Diego 2, Pittsburgh 1: Henry Blanco hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning for the winning run, one of two runs in the game scored without the benefit of a hit.

Florida 3, Cincinnati 2: Pinch-hitter Ross Gload connected for a two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Marlins rallied to beat the Reds for the second straight day.

N. Y. Mets 3, Washington 2: Tim Redding pitched into the eighth inning and the Mets ended their six-game losing streak. They avoided their longest skid since dropping 11 straight Aug. 28 to Sept. 8, 2004.

Atlanta 6, Philadelphia 4: Javier Vazquez outpitched an ailing Pedro Martinez, who left after three innings with next stiffness, and the Braves snapped the Phillies’ six-game winning streak.

Milwaukee 7, Houston 2: Jeff Suppan pitched seven innings and Prince Fielder set the Milwaukee record for RBIs (127). It was the fourth straight win for Milwaukee, which hadn’t won that many in a row since May 16-19.

L. A. Dodgers 12, San Francisco 1: Ronnie Belliard hit a grand slam and Matt Kemp and James Loney added back-to-back drives off former teammate Brad Penny for the Dodgers.

St. Louis 2, Chicago Cubs 1: Brendan Ryan hit an outfielder- assisted homer and singled in the winning run in the ninth inning as the Cardinals reduced the Cardinals’ magic number for clinching the NL Central to four.

Colorado 10, Arizona 4: Troy Tulowitzki homered for a career- best fourth game in a row, Jason Giambi hit his first home run since coming to Colorado and the Rockies padded their wild-card lead to 3z 3/4 1/2 me 1/3 .

AL late Friday games

Seattle 3, N. Y. Yankees 2: Ichiro Suzuki hit a two-out, two-run homer off New York closer Mariano Rivera and the Mariners stunned the Yankees. Rivera had struck out the first two batters of the inning, his 999th and 1,000th career strikeouts, before Mike Sweeney’s pinch-hit double. Suzuki then recorded the walk-off hit for the second straight night. Saturday’s game did not end in time for this edition.

NL late Friday games

San Francisco 8, L. A. Dodgers 4: Eugenio Velez and Pablo Sandoval homered, pinch-hitter Fred Lewis doubled home the go-ahead run and the Giants won their 80th game, their most since 2004.

Colorado 7, Arizona 5: Gerardo Parra doubled in the go-ahead runs while Brandon Allen and Ryan Roberts homered for the last-place Diamondbacks.
