Updated: 05/06/08 6:36 AM Canisius College sophomore Natalia Tarasova posted a final round total of 94.167 to take second behind 2004 Olympian Sara Lowe (95.667) in the solo event at the U. S. Synchronized Swimming National Championship in Tucson, Ariz. Tarasova, along with freshman Yulia Shepeleva were fourth place in the duet with 93.917, less than a tenth of a point out of third place. Lowe and Courtneay Stewart won the duet with 96. The Canisius duo earned honorary All-America honors in March at the 2008 U. S. Collegiate Championships. Tarasova finished second while Shepeleva was fourth in the solo event. Tarasova and Shepeleva finished second in the duet at the 2008 U. S. Collegiate Championships, the best finish in school history.

Updated: 05/02/08 6:39 AM The ninth annual Wyatt’s 3-Mile Walk for SMA Type 1 will begin at 10 a. m. Saturday at Veteran’s Park picnic shelter in the City of Tonawanda. Registration begins at 8:45 a. m. with a picnic to follow at 10:45 and raffles commence at 11:30. Proceeds benefit the Wyatt Kyle Sutker Foundation, established as a testament to Wyatt, who died of SMA at the age of 5z month 1/3 in April 1999. Spinal Muscular Atrophy, also known as Werding-Hoffman disease, is the most common fatal disorder of infancy. It is an inherited neuromuscular disorder characterized by degeneration of the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord and motor nuclei, causing severe muscle weakness and eventually death. One in every 40 people carry the disease and one in every 6,000 births is affected. Registration is $15 the day of the walk and all participants receive one complimentary raffle ticket for every $25 in paid pledges. All receive an event gift. The walk will take place on the Riverwalk, from Vet Park to the Grand Island Bridge and back.
