After watching the five Kentucky Derby prep races served up over the course of 2 1/2 hours on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 20), I think the most impressive horse of the day was the winner of the $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes, the first and shortest race on the menu — a chestnut

colt named D'Funnybone.

The last time I saw D'Funnybone (a son of D'wildcat) he was finishing 13th and last in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita on Nov. 7. But I never held that poor finish against him. It was his only time on a synthetic track and I don't think trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. really had the race in his sights as a main objective.

But things are different now. The May 1 Kentucky Derby is clearly in the cross hairs and Dutrow has this colt right on target.

After the Breeders' Cup, he shipped D'Funnybone, who had been training at Aqueduct, to Gulfstream Park in Florida, gave him seven weeks off and, on Christmas Eve morning, began training him for the first Saturday in May.

Between Dec. 24 and Feb. 16, D'Funnybone worked out regularly, every four or five days, first at 3 furlongs, then 4, 5 and 6 until he was ready for Saturday's 7-furlong Hutcheson, which he won pretty easily under Edgar Prado.

The time was an impressive 1:22.14 and, best of all, D'Funnybone did it by coming from behind after stalking the two front-runners for a half-mile.

The biggest winner of the afternoon, as measured by margin of victory, came about an hour later at Gulfstream when Eskendereya, ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Todd Pletcher, ran off with an 8 1/2-length victory in the $250,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes, the first 1 1/8

mile prep race of 2010.

Eskendereya, a grandson of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, was followed by four horses that before the race I considered to be serious Derby contenders. Namely Jackson Bend (second), Aikenite (third), Pulsion (sixth) and Buddy's Saint.

Buddy's Saint, who went off the 9-5 favorite for trainer Bruce Levine, had all kinds of trouble. He got off a step slow, got bumped and checked on the first turn, then made a little run up the backstretch before tiring. I think you can call his race a "throw out" and give him

another chance.

Eskendereya was just one of three Derby prep winners on the day for Pletcher, who also won the $300,000 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds with Discreetly Mine in the $150,000 El Camino Real Stakes at Golden Gate Park with Connemara.

Discreetly Mine led all the way under Javier Castellano to win the 1 1/16-mile race by 1 1/2 lengths. The field wasn't as strong as the Fountain of Youth, but this is still a nice colt even though he's apparently Pletcher's second-stringer.

Connemara, with Russell Baze aboard, came from last to first against a nondescript field to win the 1 1/8-mile El Camino Real over a synthetic surface in 1:51.26. The time was 2.39 seconds slower than Eskendereya's victory at the same distance.

The fifth Derby prep winner of the day was Conveyance, who ran a mile in a sharp 1:36.94 to take the $250,000 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park, a race that was postponed from Monday because of the cold at Hot Springs, Ark.

Conveyance is a Santa Anita-based colt trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert for Sheikh Mohammaed of Dubai, who bought him in January. He wired the field in 1:36.94 under Martin Garcia, a substitute for regular jockey Garrett Gomez.

Conveyance is unbeaten in four starts on both artificial and dirt surfaces and must be considered a Derby contender even though his pedigree suggests he is not bred for 1 1/4 miles.

The runner-up in the Southwest was Dublin, a Grade 1 winner (the 7-furlong Hopeful at Saratoga) who was making his first start since undergoing minor throat surgery in November. Trained by Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas and ridden by Terry Thompson, Dublin gained 3 1/4

lengths on Conveyance in the stretch and looked like he wants to go longer.

If the 2010 Kentucky Derby were held today (instead of May 1), here's how I'd rank the top contenders. (With career starts, firsts, seconds, thirds, earnings, trainer, probable jockey and date of most recent race).

1. Lookin At Lucky (7-6-1-0, $1,423,000. ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2009) --- Get out your notebooks, pencils , calculators and stop watches. We're officially on the road to the Kentucky Derby.

The first important prep race, of course, was the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Park on Nov. 7.

Over the years, the Juvenile has been a key indicator of future Derby success, even though only one Juvenile winner (Street Sense in 2006) actually went on to win the Run for the Roses on the first Saturday in May. Last year, for instance, Mine That Bird finished 12th and last in the Juvenile at Santa Anita and then won the Derby three races later.

If that pattern holds true, go bet your future book money on D'Funnybone, the New York-based colt (stabled at Aqueduct with trainer Richard Dutrow Jr.) who ran 13th and last in the Breeders' Cup race.

Don't laugh. This was the only time in five career starts that D'Funnybone had raced on a synthetic surface. And, after watching races at Santa Anita for four days, I have come to agree with the widely-held opinion that "dirt horses" can't handle synthetics. The Juvenile is a throwout for D'Funnybone, who ran second for the first three-quarters of a mile, and should not be downgraded.

Another non-winning contender to emerge from the Juvenile is runner-up Lookin At Lucky, beaten by a head as the 2-1 favorite.

Leaving from post 13, he closed from 10th to be second and, as trainer Bob Baffert said, "He probably was the best horse, but the post killed him." There's no reason to think Lookin At Lucky is not going to be Baffert's main Derby horse.

"He showed today what a good horse he is," Baffert said. "It's just frustrating to know you have much the best horse and come up short like that. ... At least you know that you can look forward to the Derby."

Oh yes, the winner of the Juvenile was an Irish-bred, Dubai-owned bay colt named Vale of York.

Whether or not he'll become a Derby threat is yet to be known. As the Dubai-based Godolphin Stable does with all its good 3-year-olds, Vale of York will be taken home to winter in Dubai and train there for the Derby. This formula has so-far been unsuccessful and Godolphin has yet to earn a dime at the Derby.

"I think we're definitely [going to] take him back to Dubai and look at the New Guineas and the [Dubai] Derby there at the new race track that Sheikh Mohammed [Godolphin's owner] is building," said Simon Crisford, Godolphin's racing manager. "But after that we'll look at the Kentucky Derby. But we need to make it through the next stage first before we can make any firm committments."

Crisford said "of all the 2-year-olds we have right now, he would be the one we're looking at for Churchill Downs. But handling synthetic surfaces and racing on the dirt surface is two completely different things. So this horse will not have run on any dirt by time he gets to Churchill Downs if he gets there."

Crisford went on to say "the horse booked his ticket [to Churchill Downs] winning today. He's certainly booked his ticket to be given the respect to try to get there anyway. Let's hope he can get there."

Crisford said that before the Breeders' Cup victory, Vale of York was considered just the second best 2-year-old in the Godolphin stable. The best youngster was thought to be Buzzword, who finished fifth in Saturday's other Breeders' Cup race for 2-year-olds --- the Juvenile Turf --- at a mile on the grass. It was the first race in North America for Buzzword, who posted a 2-3-1 record in seven starts on the grass in England and France.

It also was the first race in the U.S. and on a non-grass surface for Pounced, the winner, who had won once and placed twice in his only career starts in England and France.

Nat Rothschild, owner of Pounced, was asked if he was dreaming about the Derby now.

"I just want to enjoy today, and this week, and this month, and even the rest of the year, savor this moment," Rothschild said. "I don't think about the next step."

But I do.

I'm going to put the names of D'Funnybone, Lookin At Lucky, Noble's Promise (third in the Juvenile followed by:) Piscitellli, Aikenite, Beethoven, Radiohead, William's Kitten, Eskendereya, Alfred Nobel, Pulsion and Aspire in my "Horses to Watch" list and buckle up for a long, hot and interesting fall, winter and spring. And maybe send a few "Future Book" bets to Las Vegas along the way.

The Derby this year is on May 1, just 174 days away. As the man tells the jockeys at the starting gate, "get tied on!"

Triple Crown time in Canada

With the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes in the history books, it's time to focus on Canada's Triple Crown for 3-year-old thoroughbreds born in that country. The series started with Eye of the Leopard winning the Queen's Plate at Woodbine on June 21 and continues with the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on July 12 and the Breeders' Stakes over the Woodbine turf on Aug. 2.

There will be no Triple Crown winner this year. Queen's Plate winner Eye of the Leopard finished third in the Prince of Wales, a half-length behind Gallant and Milwaukee Appeal, who were separated by a nose. Long shot Perfect Shower took the Breeders' Stakes at odds of 46-1.
