Durham wins IL title
Updated: August 21, 2010, 2:02 AM
John Jaso’s RBI double with one out in the top of the 12th gave the Durham Bulls a 3-2 win over the Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre Yankees and a three-game sweep of the International League’s Governors’ Cup finals.
Durham won its third title since joining the IL in 1998 and avenged a defeat in last year’s final to the Yankees. The Bulls also lost the final in 2007 to Richmond but won it with sweeps in 2002 (over the Buffalo Bisons) and 2003 (over Pawtucket).
Scranton scored just four runs in the three games after losing by back-to-back 4-1 scores to open the series in Durham. The Yankees took a 2-0 lead in Game Three but Desmond Jennings’ two-out, two-run single to left in the top of the eighth pulled the Bulls into a 2-2 tie after Scranton starter Ivan Nova had thrown seven shutout innings.
Durham will meet the Pacific Coast League champion, either Sacramento or Memphis, in Tuesday’s Triple-A National Championship Game in Oklahoma City.
