Thompson returns to ring
It's been nearly nine months since former New York State Golden Gloves champion Lionell Thompson (1-0, 1 KO) has stepped into the ring, the longest period of inactivity in his career.
The wait comes to an end tonight when he'll face Michael Montoya (2-0-1, 2 KOs) in a light heavyweight bout during the "Road to Redemption" six-card boxing event at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.
Thompson hasn't fought since winning his pro debut via knockout in the first round Feb. 20 over Zaid Malik, but is familiar with Montoya. The two met as amateurs in May 2007 with Thompson ending the Colorado Springs resident's quest to qualify for the U.S. Olympic boxing trails with a 36-31 semifinal win.
"I trained hard for this fight," said Thompson during Thursday's prefight weigh-in at the Downtown Holiday Inn. "Mentally and physically, I'm ready. I'm just looking for the best performance I can put on."
Tickets, starting at $25 for general admission, can be purchased at championsofboxing.com or by calling (877) 772-5425.
