COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Senior defenseman Matt Williams scored on a shot from the point at 4:49 of sudden death overtime to give Niagara (15-19-5) a 4-3 victory over Air Force in the deciding game of their best-of-three Atlantic Hockey quarterfinal playoff series at the Cadet Rink.
Williams sent a shot inside the far post after a clean faceoff win by T.J. Sarcona while the teams were skating 4-on-4 after coincidental minors against Patrick Divjak of the Purple Eagles and Tony Thomas of the Falcons.
Freshman goalie Jackson Teichroeb held off Air Force with 13 saves in the third period otherwise sixth-seeded Niagara would not be moving on to a semifinal date against No. 5 seed Robert Morris at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester this Friday.
Teichroeb had 31 saves overall. He was helped by the defensive work of Ryan Rashid who had five blocked shots in the third.
The Purple Eagles took a 3-2 lead into the third period after goals by Michael Benedict, Stephen Pietrobon and Patrick Conte. Air Force (21-14-4) tied it on Ryan Timar’s goal with 13:31 left in the third period. The No. 3 Falcons had a goal disallowed when after video review determined it was gloved into the net.
