PHOENIX — The Boston Celtics say forward Kevin Garnett will miss two to three weeks because of a strained muscle behind his knee.

Garnett returned Friday to Boston after injuring the knee on the team’s West Coast trip. Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss says Saturday that team doctor Brian McKeon diagnosed the muscle strain after tests and an MRI.

Garnett injured his knee while going up for an alley-oop late in the first half of Boston’s 90-85 loss to the Utah Jazz on Thursday. He landed gingerly and immediately motioned to the bench for a substitute.

After the game, the team decided to send him back to Boston as a precaution when the soreness in his knee persisted. The Celtics play in Phoenix today (2: 30 p. m., Ch. 7).

Jazz win for owner

SALT LAKE CITY — Deron Williams had 20 points and 13 assists as the Utah Jazz honored the memory of Larry H. Miller with a 102-88 win over the New Orleans Hornets on Saturday.

The Jazz held a pregame moment of silence before the game and the players wore patches with the initials LHM as Miller’s courtside seat remained empty during a game he would have especially enjoyed.

The Jazz improved to 10 games above .500 for the first time this season and after the buzzer, Williams walked the game ball across the court to hand it to Miller’s widow, Gail, and hugged her. Miller, 64, died Friday of complications from diabetes.

Chris Paul had 24 points and seven assists for New Orleans, which was coming off an overtime loss in Los Angeles the night before.

Wade leads Heat

MIAMI — Dwyane Wade had 25 points and nine assists, including a big layup with one minute left, and the Miami Heat moved a step away from their closest pursuers in the Eastern Conference playoff race by beating the Philadelphia 76ers, 97-91.

Jermaine O’Neal finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds in his second game with the Heat, who also got 13 points and 10 rebounds from Udonis Haslem and 12 points from Jamario Moon.

Andre Miller had 30 points — the most by a 76ers player since late last season — and nine rebounds, and Louis Williams scored 22 off the bench for Philadelphia.
