L. A. Angels 7, Boston 5: Casey Kotchman and Torii Hunter homered in a six-run sixth inning and the Angels improved baseball’s best record with a win over Daisuke Matsuzaka and the Red Sox. Manny Ramirez homered for Boston.

Cleveland 5, Detroit 0: Paul Byrd pitched into the eighth inning and combined with Edward Mujica on a four-hitter for the Indians.

Toronto 3, Tampa Bay 1: A. J. Burnett matched a career-high with his 12th win, Matt Stairs hit a two-run homer and the Blue Jays beat the Rays.

Seattle 7, Texas 5: Adrian Beltre homered twice, including the go-ahead shot in the eighth inning, to lead the Mariners. Rangers’ Michael Young broke a finger in the game and may miss a week of play.

Minnesota 7, Chicago White Sox 0: Kevin Slowey pitched a six-hitter, while Denard Span hit his first major league home run for the Twins.

Kansas City 4, Oakland 2: Jose Guillen hit his first home run in more than a month and Alex Gordon also had a two-run homer to help Zack Greinke to his first win in July. Greinke struck out a career-high 11 in 7x innin 3/4 1/3 .

National League

Pittsburgh 8, Colorado 4: Ian Snell won for the second time in 18 starts, and Nate McLouth homered as the Pirates snapped the Rockies’ five-game winning streak.

Florida 7, N. Y. Mets 3: Dan Uggla and Cody Ross hit RBI singles to spark a five-run eighth inning in the Marlins’ late rally.

St. Louis 12, Atlanta 3: Albert Pujols drove in three runs, while Braden Looper won for the first time in six starts.

Chicago Cubs 6, Milwaukee 4: Derrek Lee doubled with one out in the ninth to score Alfonso Soriano with the game-winning run for the Cubs.

Houston 5, Cincinnati 4: Roy Oswalt came off the disabled list and beat Cincinnati again, striking out five in the Astros’ win. He’s been on the disabled list for the past two weeks with a hip injury.

San Diego 8, Arizona 5: Greg Maddux earned the win for the Padres, as he ended a long slump. He improved his record to 4-8 with his first win in 15 starts. The Padres scored six times in the third inning.

San Francisco 7, L. A. Dodgers 6: Jose Castillo hit a pair of RBI singles and Fred Lewis also drove in two runs as the Giants snapped a three-game losing streak.

Around the horn

Toronto Blue Jays: Asked whether the team would deal A. J. Burnett before Thursday’s trade deadline, General Manager J. P. Ricciardi was emphatic: “He’s not going anywhere.”

Atlanta Braves: Right-hander Tim Hudson had an MRI that showed ligament damage in his pitching elbow, sending the ace to the disabled list and leaving the rest of his season in doubt.
