Podlas keeps on winning at state tennis

Section VI singles champion Miranda Podlas of Williamsville East advanced through two rounds of the State Tennis Championships at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius on Saturday.

Podlas defeated Clair Minnoe of Auburn (Section III), 6-4, and 6-1, then triumphed over Amanda Rosati of Holy Name (Section II), 6-3 and 6-1.

Orchard Park's Caroline Bristol, the Section VI runner-up, won her first match over Lis Ventimiglia of St. Francis Prep (CHSAA) but lost to Robyn Romanoff of Middle Country (Section XI).

The Orchard Park doubles team of Katie Pasier and Alison Tepas won its opening match over a team from Roslyn (Section VIII), but lost to Diana Vamvakitis and Jaimie Hann of Westhampton Beach (Section XI). Two other Section VI doubles teams lost opening matches.

Tournament play continues today and Monday.

Boys volleyball

Jonas Stalyga had 19 kills and served three aces and Tyler Hinaman had five aces and 21 assists to lead Grand Island past Lake Shore in the Section VI Class B semifinals at Orchard Park. The scores were 25-20, 25-10 and 25-13.

Hinaman also had 13 digs for the Vikings.

"So far it was our best team performance," said GI coach Bill Schultz. "We played as a team finally. It took more than one person getting the kills. Everyone did their job today."

Grand Island (12-5) will face Eden (14-6) in Tuesday's Class B championship. The Raiders advanced by sweeping three games from Iroquois, 25-23, 25-15 and 25-20.

Matt Meyer led Eden with 13 kills. Justin Waldorf had nine kills.

Hamburg dropped the first game to Orchard Park, 25-13, but came back to defeat the Quakers in five hard-fought games to advanced to the Class A championship against Sweet Home on Tuesday. Adam Dings had 65 assists in the match for the Bulldogs while Brian Toense had 25 digs.

In the other semifinal, two kills and a stuff block by Chris Koester in the third game sparked Sweet Home past Kenmore West in four games. Stephan Maxwell (13 kills), Trevor Barrett and Cody Stonish (11 kills each) led the Panthers, who won the last two games, 25-22 and 22-18, after West won the second game, 25-16.
