Canisius, O’Hara reach finals
South Park ends streak
Canisius shut out Bishop Timon- St. Jude, 33-0, in a Monsignor Martin Association League AA semifinal playoff game Saturday at Koessler Field in West Seneca.
The Crusaders will meet St. Francis on Friday at 7:30 p. m. at Ralph Wilson Stadium in a rematch of last year’s title game, which was won by the Red Raiders, 21-0.
Canisius quarterback Sean Brady completed 11 of 18 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns. He also gained 38 yards on six carries.
Brady’s receivers had a big day. Anthony Fulhan made three catches for 52 yards, Andrew Zdrojewski gained 82 yards and scored a TD, Steve Nadlock had three catches for 35 yards and Derek Brim made one catch for 12 yards.
On the ground, the Crusaders gained a total of 303 yards in 41 carries. Leading rusher Ricky Pringle gained 107 yards on 18 carries and scored a touchdown.
In the Monsignor Martin Association league A playoffs, Cardinal O’- Hara and St. Mary’s will face each other in the title game for the fourth year in a row as both advanced to the final with one-sided victories.
O’Hara and St. Mary’s will play Friday at 5 p. m. at Ralph Wilson Stadium. St. Mary’s has appeared in the final each year since 2001.
O’Hara 58, Walsh 8: Six different O’Hara ball carriers scored touchdowns as the Hawks rolled up 321 rushing yards and held the Olean to just 81 total yards, including one play for 75 yards on the last play of the first half.
O’Hara freshman Anthony Tate rushed for for 106 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Teammate Robert Davis had five carries for 62 yards and two scores. Brandon Lyles carried four times for 81 yards.
Amir Thomas, Anthony Tate and Shaquille Dudley got five tackles each for O’Hara, which has won the last three league A titles.
St. Mary’s 37, Nichols 6: St. Mary’s led by just 9-6 at the half, but broke the game open with 20 points in the third quarter on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Greg Justin to Matt Cronmiller, a 17-yard TD run by Patrick Morgan and a 39-yard scoring run by Alex Elwell.
St. Mary’s gained 230 yards rushing, led by Brandon Barczak (two carries for 69 yards) and Morgan (six carries, 66 yards).
On defense, Scott Ickowski led St. Mary’s with with 11 tackles and Elwell had nine tackles and a fumble recovery.
Harvard Cup
Riverside 20, McKinley 0: Quarterback David Drayton threw for one touchdown and rushed for another as the Frontiers locked up the No. 1 seed in next weekend’s Harvard Cup playoffs. Trent Alls opened the scoring with a 1-yard run.
The game was suspended at halftime and Riverside was declared the winner following an accident at All High Stadium. Buffalo News sportswriter Tom Borrelli suffered serious injuries to his head and neck when he fell down the stairs leading to the press box. He was treated at the scene and taken to ECMC.
Lafayette 14, Bennett 8: Toddree Rogers rushed for 124 yards on 17 carries, while Lafayette teammate Corey Perry had a 13-yard TD and 87 yards on nine carries in the win.
But it was the defense that came up huge for the Mighty Violets, which made two goal line stands, the last with seven minutes left in which Isaiah Carpenter recorded a sack on a fourth-and-1 play.
Jamil Muhammad finished with two interceptions and seven tackles.
South Park 30, East 18: South Park broke an 18-18 tie and a 27-game losing streak with two fourth-quarter touchdown runs by Robert Marlava at All High Stadium.
Malava’s scoring runs of 36 and 2 yards came on two of his 33 carries for 218 yards. He also made five catches for 60 yards.
South Park quarterback Scott Roth completed eight of 18 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, Dennis Thomas had two sacks and two interceptions.
