Wolf lists best of the best
During his 46-year hitch at St. Joe’s, not much made Joe Wolf squirm in his seat.
But that’s what happened when he was asked to name the top 10 all-around athletes who wore Marauders maroon during his watch.
After a bit of prodding and the obligatory apologies to those who missed the cut, here they are (listed alphabetically):
• Gary Castine (Class of 1971): Fired school-record eight touchdown passes in a 1969 game against Bishop Turner, played basketball and was on two Georgetown Cup-winning baseball squads.
• Domonic Cook (2007): Twotime All-Western New York football player had 109 career catches for 1,466 yards and 24 TDs, as well as 145 solo tackles at linebacker, and added 878 points and 450 assists during his basketball career. Now a sophomore cornerback at the University at Buffalo.
• Kevin Deakin (1986): Twotime All-Catholic selection in football, hockey and baseball.
• Sandro DeAngelis (2000): The News’ football Player of the Year in 1998 scored 336 career points, accepted a scholarship at Nebraska and now kicks for the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders.
• Bill Hurley (1975): Former standout Syracuse University quarterback and NFL defensive back who also excelled in baseball (he was considered a pro prospect as a catcher) and hockey.
• Chris Rehbaum (1979): Rushed for 1,168 yards in 1978, including 305 in one game, was drafted by the Cleveland Indians and was all-league in hockey. Now coaches Wolf’s grandson, 8-yearold C. J. Goss, in mite hockey.
• Namaan Roosevelt (2006): Record-setting quarterback was the 2005 Connolly Cup winner, the first in St. Joe’s history. Now a junior wide receiver and return man at UB.
• Phil Scaffidi (1974): Football, basketball, baseball and track star who set the Niagara University career assists record and played two seasons of minor-league ball in the Pirates organization.
• Dale Tepas (1967): Four-sport All-Catholic and two-time All-WNY basketball player who scored 1,233 career points and helped St. Bonaventure reach the 1970 Final Four.
