West Seneca East experienced one of those Excedrin moments last week against Hamburg, something the Trojans hope to avoid tonight against South Park.
Week Five in local high school football kicks off with a battle for first place in Class A South as West Seneca East, the No. 6-ranked large school team, hosts No. 9 South Park at 7 tonight. Both teams are 3-0 in the division.
Unranked Hamburg nearly pulled off a huge upset against last year’s Section VI Class A runner-up after scoring a late touchdown. Hamburg wasn’t able to recover the onside kick and East won, 10-7.
The 4-0 Trojans have outscored opponents 143-29 to start the season.
South Park had a much easier time with Lake Shore as the Sparks soundly thumped the Eagles, 40-0. South Park (3-1) started slowly before scoring 24 straight points in the second quarter to pull away.
West Seneca East-South Park highlights several key matchups this weekend.
St. Francis (1-3, 0-1) hosts Monsignor Martin rival St. Joe’s at 7 in a matchup of two teams who will be a bit surly.
Third-ranked St. Joe’s (3-1, 1-0) fell from the ranks of the unbeaten last week in a heartbreaking loss to state No. 1 Aquinas of Section V (Rochester).
The Li’l Irish rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit to outscore the Marauders, 12-0, in the final quarter for a 31-21 win. St. Joe’s won at Aquinas a year ago.
“We ran out of gas in the fourth quarter, we just couldn’t answer the bell anymore,” St. Joe’s coach Dennis Gilbert said after last week’s game. “They’re a great team. I’d like to play them every week.”
Instead, St. Joe’s takes on a St. Francis team that lost at home, 35-9, last week to Canisius, the No. 2-ranked large school, as the Crusaders rolled up 338 yards of offense, led by tailback Qadree Ollison’s 117 yards on 27 carries.
A Class AA matchup at 7:30 finds Orchard Park, coming off a huge homecoming win over Williamsville South, heading to Lancaster, which looks to bounce back from its first loss at Jamestown, now the area’s No. 1-ranked large school team.
Orchard Park handed Williamsville South a 42-21 loss at Orchard Park as Desean Walker led the Quakers with 192 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 18 carries. Orchard Park’s defense also registered four interceptions.
Meanwhile, Jamestown romped over Lancaster, 58-20.
Saturday features a clash of Class A North rivals as No. 5 Sweet Home plays at No. 8 Grand Island at 2 p.m.
St. Mary’s heads to the Stransky Complex in West Seneca to face Canisius in the Monsignor Martin at 1 p.m., while Frontier goes for a 5-0 start at 2 p.m. at Kenmore West, which has won back-to-back games to move to .500 at 2-2.
