N-W icers eliminated

Section VI champion Niagara-Wheatfield (13-7-3) couldn’t overcome a three-goal deficit and lost to Ithaca, 4-3, at The Rink in Ithaca on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the State Public School Boys Ice Hockey Division I playoffs. It was a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal won by N-W.

The Falcons trailed, 3-0, after two periods before goals by Anthony Vekich and James Stenzel made it 3-2. Ithaca scored short-handed with about six minutes left. N-W got that one back when Matt Paonessa scored.

“We started taking the game over in the second period but we couldn’t put anything in the net,” said N-W coach Rick Wrazin.

Section VI girls second

Led by a 1,166 six-game series by Cassidy Powers (North Tonawanda), the Section VI team finished second to Section III (Syracuse area) in Sunday’s intersectional portion of the NYSPHSAA bowling tournament at Babylon Lanes on Long Island.

Powers shot a 234 and a 231 game in the afternoon block for a 632.

The boys all-Section VI team finished seventh.
