WSW set for showdown
West Seneca West, the third-ranked team in the WNY Boys Volleyball Coaches Poll, cleared the decks for Wednesday’s showdown against No. 2 Canisius by sweeping Williamsville North, 25-18, 25-17 and 25-16, in their ECIC I match Tuesday. Gregg Hart led the Indians with six kills.
No. 4 Clarence took a grueling match from No. 9 Lancaster, 25-23, 26-24, 21-25 and 25-19, in a meeting of ranked ECIC I teams. Jake Baran had 16 digs and Dale Payne and Brandon Hill 10 kills each for the Red Devils (7-1, 3-0).
Elsewhere, fifth-ranked Williamsville South improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in ECIC II by rallying from a first set loss to defeat Sweet Home, 21-25, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-21. Andhony Podgorsak led the Billies with 12 kills and six aces while Ryan Nigaro had 10 blocks. … In ECIC III, eighth-ranked Eden defeated Depew in straight sets, 25-13, 25-14 and 25-18. Declan Pierce had nine aces and eight assists for the Raiders (2-0).
OP soccer upsets Lancaster
Ryan McMaster scored off a pass from Noah Kohl at 2:40 of the second overtime as Orchard Park upset No. 4 ranked Lancaster, 2-1, in ECIC I boys soccer. Connor Saeli took a pass from Matt Reilly with 24 seconds left in the first half to give OP the lead. Lancaster tied it with 2:49 left in regulation.
Tom Todaro scored in overtime as Kenmore West (3-4-0, 3-2-0 Niagara Frontier League) ended a long drought against Lockport, defeating the Lions for the first time since 2007, 3-2, Casey Morgan had the other two goals for the Blue Devils.
In girls soccer, Williamsville South defeated Hamburg, 2-1, in a battle of unbeaten ECIC II teams. Kara Daly had the Hamburg goal.
Niagara Frontier League goal scoring leader Gretta Dry tallied three times and assisted on another in leading undefeated Lockport (7-0, 5-0) to a 5-0 victory over Kenmore West. Dry has 20 goals and three assists this season. … Ellicottville and Olean played to a 3-3 draw in their CCAA East division game. Morgan Zlockie had a pair of goals and an assist and Hannah Doro had the other tally for the Eagles.
Heather Mason scored two goals in the second half, one off a penalty corner, to lead Barker (4-0, 3-0 league) over Wilson in Niagara-Orleans League field hockey.
Bennett to honor two
Peter Cammarata will receive the Earle Hannel Memorial Award and Richard Vieth will be the Career Achievement recipient at the Bennett Hall of Fame induction ceremonies on Oct. 5 in the school foyer. The ceremonies will start at 4 p.m.
